Between 2005 and 2011, and again from 2020 to 2021, the event was a part of the Formula One World Championship, with the latter two years being canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2005 Turkish Grand Prix weekend featured thrilling on-track action, with numerous drivers spinning off due to pushing too hard throughout the weekend, notably at Turn 8, when Juan Pablo Montoya drove wide with two laps to go after contact with Jordan’s Tiago Monteiro.
