Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev seized his opportunity by defeating Ben Shelton in the Bavarian Open final, regaining the World No. 2 spot from Alcaraz.
Alcaraz struggled to find his rhythm against Rune, ultimately suffering a straight-sets defeat, 7-6(8-6), 6-2, in front of a Spanish crowd. While Alcaraz faltered, Rune’s win propelled him to his first Barcelona Open title, marking a major career milestone.
Zverev, already victorious in Munich, needed only an Alcaraz loss to reclaim the No. 2 ranking. Rune’s upset sealed the deal, allowing Zverev to leapfrog the young Spaniard.
Rune’s success also sparked a significant rise in his own ranking, jumping four spots to enter the Top 10 at No. 9. This movement came at the expense of Russian Daniil Medvedev, who slipped to No. 10, and Norwegian Casper Ruud, who fell out of the Top 10 altogether, landing at No. 15.
