“Early in the offseason, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan sat down with Purdy and assured him that if he was healthy he would be the starter unless Brady wanted to play one more season for his hometown Niners. An ecstatic Purdy understood the logic, but the competitor in him also bubbled under the surface.



‘That meant so much to me,’ Purdy said. ‘I remember him saying, if we can get Tom Brady, we’re going to try to get him. And I was like, ‘Yeah, he’s the GOAT. I get it.’ But something deep down inside me was sort of like, ‘Dude, I just showed you that I can play well in this system. And we were one game away from the Super Bowl.’ … More than anything, I was like, ‘OK, now let’s go.&apos;”

Brady has been linked with his hometown team for a long time, especially when he left the New England Patriots in 2020. While that selection made Purdy that year’s “Mr. Irrelevant,” he turned out to be quite relevant for San Francisco. The Niners started last season with Trey Lance being promoted to QB1, with Garoppolo demoted to the bench.



However, injuries to both signal-callers during the regular season forced the team to lean on its third-string quarterback, who took everyone by surprise. Purdy’s strong play saw the 49ers make all the way to the NFC Championship Game, where he unfortunately had to be replaced due to an elbow injury.

<h2>Shanahan Is Done Talking About Purdy’s Bad Game:</h2>



“Yeah, he was great,” Shanahan said. “I think, no offense to you, but I’m so exhausted talking about the interceptions from our last game, but it’s been like any other week and like any other play. He goes through each play one at a time and tries to do as best he can.”



Purdy has also addressed the four picks and his struggles vs. the Ravens multiple times. At least, he seemed more optimistic about that and talked about it being a learning experience ahead of the most crucial time of the season.



<h2>Purdy Says It Was A Learning Experience</h2>



“It’s a great learning experience just in terms of not buying into what’s going on around and what’s being said,” Purdy told 49ersWebzone.com. “Instead, executing in the moment, making the right reads, being consistent, protecting the ball, all those things. It’s such a good learning experience. And it’s not to say I’m going to be perfect moving forward. It’s football, man, you’re not perfect. But for me, I think it was huge just in terms of being a quarterback in this league.”



The former Mr. Irrelevant also believes it was actually good for the Niners to get a bit of a wake-up call, as now they know what they need to do to get better and address their flaws:

“When things are going well, people can say some great things, and it’s easy to buy into it a little bit,” Purdy said. “But you got to put your head down, go to work, have that chip on your shoulder still, and still prove to yourself that you got to continue to show your teammates that you’re the guy week in and week out. So definitely something for me to learn from.”

<h2>Christian McCaffrey knows winning MVP could do good for RBs</h2>



McCaffrey is having a terrific season with the Niners, making a strong case to become the first non-quarterback to be named the Most Valuable Player since Adrian Peterson in 2012.

Apart from leading the NFL in rushing (1,292) and scrimmage yards (1,801) in 2023, the 49ers star is tied as the league’s touchdown leader with 20. Running backs are often overlooked in this award, which is why CMC appreciates being in the conversation. 



“Well, I appreciate you saying that, man. That means a lot,” McCaffrey said to Brady. “I don’t get into all the award stuff, but to your point, I just think even being in the conversation is an honor, and specifically for that reason and the timing of it with running backs and some of the stuff, and I think when you look at the history of the NFL and running backs and where we’re at now. Every position other than a couple at some point has kind of had their dips as far as the market goes, and part of it is just fighting against the franchise tag and fighting against different things going on around the league.“

In the event he wins the prize, McCaffrey would become the 17th running back to take home the MVP award. Even so, the 27-year-old doesn’t want to get distracted from the ultimate goal, which is to go the distance with the 49ers.



“But, you know, I don’t know if that’s why it feels good. It does feel good. Obviously, there’s still a lot of football left and that’s really where my mind’s at. But it’s cool to see a lot of the other running backs who are having a lot of success as well. … I look at guys around the league who are continuing to have success and that motivates me and continues to push me to compete with them. But also at the same time it’s great for the position.”



<h2>McCaffrey thanks Brady, but insists Purdy should win MVP</h2>



Brady echoed McCaffrey’s sentiments, explaining he also felt like all that mattered was winning team awards. “You can have a great individual year and you could be a really good player on a bad team, which is not very much fun. I think for me it was always about celebrating the success with other players and the best moments weren’t accepting a trophy, an MVP trophy. It was accepting a Super Bowl ring with all the people that played a part of that.”

Even though he admits how important winning the award could be for the running back position, McCaffrey made it clear his choice for MVP is still Brock Purdy.



“Well, vote for Brock, man. That guy deserves it, man,” McCaffrey said. “I know, obviously you respect that. He’s been unbelievable for this team and I hate when I hear people say anything negative, ‘Oh, he’s just a system quarterback.’ Everyone’s a system quarterback. That’s part of what being a quarterback is in my eyes. I mean, I don’t know much about the position. I try to stay in my lane and just try to get open and block and do all the other things. But I mean, when you play within a system that’s about all you can ask for. And then occasionally you make the plays outside of the X’s and O’s and that’s all he’s done all year. So he gets my vote.”

It’s definitely an interesting debate, since Purdy said McCaffrey should be the one who wins the MVP award by the end of the season. “I think Christian should be MVP. I really do believe that,” Purdy said. “He does everything for us. Runs the ball well, can catch the ball, he does everything. In my eyes, that’s the MVP.”



The truth is that the 49ers have been flying this season, winning the NFC West with many games to spare with an 11-3 record after 15 weeks. Both Purdy and McCaffrey have played an instrumental role in the team’s results so far, so it would be fair for any of them to be the MVP.

Of course, nobody had high expectations placed on the 2022 ‘Mr. Irrelevant’, but he has surprised everybody with his amazing talent.

While the Kansas City Chiefs free-fall, the Miami Dolphins crumble under pressure, and other AFC powerhouses like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, or Cincinnati Bengals don’t even have their starting quarterbacks out there, the Baltimore Ravens continue to sit atop of the conference.



Lamar Jackson hasn’t had his most impressive season number-wise, but he’s made great strides as a pocket passer, and the Ravens have steamrolled past their opposition more often than not. They continue to be overlooked, but they can beat you on the ground, on the air, with their defense, and even with special teams.



Thus far, the former MVP has completed almost 67% of his throws, logging 2,934 passing yards with 16 touchdowns against six interceptions. He’s also rushed 123 times for 644 yards and an additional five touchdowns, and he’ll have a tough schedule to close out the season, including matchups with the Jaguars, Niners, Dolphins, and Steelers.



<h2>2. Brock Purdy</h2>



People continue to debate whether Brock Purdy is a system quarterback or not, but the San Francisco 49ers couldn’t care less. All that matters is that they continue to have the best record in the NFC, and their quarterback has earned the locker room’s praise and trust.

Purdy has executed Kyle Shanahan’s system at an elite level, taking the offense to a whole new level and making the most of their plethora of weapons better than any other QB from the Shanahan era. That deserves credit, even if he’s not the most impressive player in the league.



He should no longer be considered Mr. Irrelevant, as he’s thrown for a whopping 3,553 yards on a 70% completion percentage, all while posting the best passer rating in the league. He has 25 touchdowns against just seven interceptions this season, and the Niners still have to face the Cardinals, Ravens, Commanders, and Rams.



<h2>1. Dak Prescott</h2>



Dak Prescott has been the best quarterback in the league this season, and it hasn’t even been close. He overcame a slow start to the campaign and managed to silence the critics, proving that he could take care of the football and lead a winning team.



Prescott is finally making plays with his feet again, and he looks poised, calm, and like the kind of guy who knows he’s capable of making every single throw, getting all of his teammates involved in the passing game.



The Cowboys still have dates with the Bills, Dolphins, Lions, and Commanders, but none of that seems like a challenge with Prescott playing at such a high level. Through 13 games, he’s thrown for 3,505 passing yards on a 69.3% completion percentage, logging 28 touchdowns against 6 interceptions.

Of course, that’s only fair if you take a look at their roster, as it looks like something out of a video game.



Then again, outside of Christian McCaffrey- and now Chase Young– the Niners have had most of this roster for years now. However, no quarterback had been able to push their offense to the next level.



That’s why, as much as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brock Purdy’s</a> numbers might not be the most impressive, he should get more credit for the way the team’s offense has operated since he took the reins.



With that in mind, superstar OL Trent Williams dissed those who still think he’s just a system quarterback, stating that “If he was Zach Wilson, I think he’d probably be unanimous MVP, [labeled as] the next coming of Aaron Rodgers, or somebody like that.”

“I don’t get why people say he’s a system quarterback,” the OT said after their win vs. the Seahawks. “No system quarterback makes tight-window throws before they’re there, throwing people open, putting the ball into a window and trusting his receiver to get there, layering balls over linebackers who are in good position, and still getting the ball over their head, getting it to the playmaker.”

“I’m a part of a special group,” Purdy said. “Any one of our guys, any one of our eligibles, man, you get the ball in their hands, and then they can go do the rest, break tackles, obviously have pull-away, breakaway speed. I mean, we see it every game. So, to throw like a five-yard pass or even a deep ball, it doesn’t matter. We’ve got playmakers.”

Bagent had a successful college career, breaking almost every quarterback record for Shepherd. He also broke the Division II record for completions (1,400) and passing yards (17,034), and the NCAA record for passing touchdowns (159). Bagent is a mobile quarterback with a strong arm. He is also a good decision-maker and has a high completion percentage. He is still developing as a player, but he has the potential to be a good NFL quarterback.

With <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/trey-lance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Trey Lance</a> and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jimmy-garoppolo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jimmy Garoppolo</a> injured, the former Iowa State player jumped in to lead the offense of the 49ers. He did it so well that head coach Kyle Shanahan decided to name him the starter for the 2023 season and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/nfl-news-hc-mike-mccarthy-didnt-ask-the-cowboys-to-trade-for-qb-trey-lance-20230906-BUS-57974.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trade Lance to the Dallas Cowboys</a>.



It appears that no one will displace Purdy from the starter role, as he’s proven to be a highly reliable quarterback who has impressed with his skills. However, it has been revealed that his career might have taken a different path if the 49ers hadn’t chosen him.

According to ESPN’s Kevin Seifert, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/minnesota-vikings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Minnesota Vikings</a> were heavily interested in signing Brock Purdy as an undrafted free-agent at the end of the 2022 Draft. However, the 49ers got him with the last pick of the 7th round, ending their hopes of landing the talented quarterback.



The same report indicates that if no team had selected Brock Purdy, he had three preferred landing spots as an undrafted free-agent: the Vikings, the Texans, and the 49ers. Obviously, his plan turned out better than expected.



<h2>Why were the Minnesota Vikings interested in Brock Purdy?</h2>



Even though the Minnesota Vikings have&nbsp;Kirk Cousins&nbsp;as the starting quarterback, it is not completely certain that he will stay with them for longer. According to reports, they are considering trading him and getting at least a second-round pick in exchange.

Last year, Cousins delivered an impressive season but fell short in the playoffs. While it’s impossible to say if Brock Purdy would have experienced the same success with the Vikings as he is now with the 49ers, Minnesota certainly missed a significant opportunity by not securing him earlier.

It took 11 games, but <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy </a>has finally lost a regular-season start. The former Mr. Irrelevant had led the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">San Francisco 49ers</a> to 10 straight wins dating back to last season, and his first career loss came in the most unimaginable way possible.



Despite being on the road, the Niners were favored by as many as 9.5 points by most oddsmakers ahead of their class with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cleveland-browns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cleveland Browns</a>. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/deshaun-watson" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deshaun Watson’s </a>absence was expected to be a deadly blow to the home team’s offense.



However, Jim Schwartz’s defense had its most impressive performance yet, locking up one of the most explosive offenses in the game and holding them to just 17 points. When asked about the loss, Purdy didn’t hesitate to take the blame and vowed to be better:



“It’s the NFL,” Purdy told 49ers Web Zone. “You get opportunities; you got to take advantage of them. And so there was [sic] definitely some throws and opportunities, I feel like that were there for me, and I missed on them, and that made us be behind the sticks. And then you have to get a third down, which is tough on the road here. And that’s something that I got to learn from, man. So [I am] definitely going to be real about it, and we all got to look ourselves in the mirror and see the flaws and stuff and get better from it. But it starts with me.”

<h2>It Was The Perfect Storm</h2>



Everything went the Browns’ way on Sunday. The Niners lost their two best playmakers, with Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey leaving the field with shoulder and oblique injuries, respectively, and putting more pressure on Purdy to lead the offense down the field.



Purdy looked far from his usual self without his set of stellar weapons at his disposal. Even so, he made no excuses and stated that he needed to do a better job of getting the guys involved to help them fill in for the stars:



“Obviously, they’re playmakers really good playmakers, and so it hurts, but at the same time, we got guys to be able to come in and make plays, too,” Purdy said. “And so that’s on me, being able to help out guys like Ray-Ray [WR Ray-Ray McCloud] and JJ [WR Jauan Jennings] that are going to play more, Elijah [RB Elijah Mitchell] coming in. I got to do a better job with just communicating to them in the huddle, giving them some sort of expectation of what’s to come in terms of the play and stuff.”



Even despite the absences, the Niners still had a chance to win the game as the clock expired. Then, in what seemed like a true miracle for the home team, K Jake Moody missed a routine field goal from 41 yards that would’ve given them a one-point lead. It was just the perfect storm.

<h2>The Browns’ Defense Is Legit</h2>



Injuries or not, the Browns defense deserves a lot of credit for the win. Even with backup QB P.J. Walker completing just 18 of 34 passes for 192 yards and two interceptions, they were able to stay on top of their rivals and keep the game close from start to finish.



They held the Niners to 215 total yards (107 passing, 108 rushing), and forced them to go 3-for-12 in third down. They also sacked Purdy three times for a loss of 18 yards, picked him up once, and forced six punts.

According to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NFL,</a> The Browns defense officially has the least yards given up through the first five games of the season (1,002) in the past 50 years. And while it definitely wasn’t pretty, a win is a win.
