The Miami Hurricanes, under Mario Cristobal, concluded their regular-season run in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">NCAAF</a> with a narrow defeat to Syracuse. The team, led by Cam Ward, played a very tight game against their rivals but ended up empty-handed. After the match, it was the coach himself who took responsibility for the outcome.


 


“We came up short, and that’s on all of us, starting with myself,” Cristobal said. “We don’t shy away from it. We’re not in any way, shape or form anything but hard workers and accountable people. And it’s brutally difficult.”

“If we get a chance to go into the playoff,” the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/miami-hurricanes">Miami Hurricanes</a> quarterback continued, “we’re going to make the most of it.”

<h2>Mario Cristobal shared his analysis following Miami’s loss to Syracuse</h2>



The Hurricanes’ visit, unfortunately for Mario Cristobal’s team, left them with a bittersweet feeling. A tremendous effort to secure the win, but a result that slipped away narrowly. The HC provided a brief analysis of what the game was like for him.



“We thought we lined up well,” Cristobal said. “They made the contested catch just about 80, 90 percent of the time. We had difficult time covering them. The ball was out quick. We affected the quarterback early. We were up by a good chunk, and that didn’t affect them as much as it went on. … They were executing a little bit better than we were. We were trying to play some man [and] we played some zone. We mixed it up as much as we could. I don’t know. We did not have much success. We blew a couple of assignments back there, too.”



While awaiting the outcome of the Championship Games to determine the Hurricanes’ fate regarding the playoffs, Cristobal reflects on the performance of his players during the regular season.



“You re-emphasize reality,” Cristobal said. “This team won 10 football games against some really good opponents, and this last game came all the way down to the wire. Our two losses are one-possession losses, less than a touchdown. That makes us one of the better teams in the country. We can control what we can control, so we have to wait and see. But certainly, this team is has really worked hard and busted its butt to put its best foot forward.”



<h2>Cam Ward believes his team deserves a spot in the Playoffs</h2>



After the painful 38-41 loss to Syracuse and while awaiting what lies ahead for the Hurricanes, the team’s star quarterback, Cam Ward, sent a clear message to the CFP committee regarding his team’s deservingness for a spot in the playoffs.


 


“If they knew what was up, they’d put us in the playoffs. We are that team,” Ward said. “It’s not in our hands anymore, but go look at the stats. We are that team. So you know, every winner’s gotta lose someday.”

The Syracuse Orange delivered an upset triumph over the Miami Hurricanes and knocked the Canes out of the ACC Championship. The Miami Hurricanes are gearing up to visit the Syracuse Orange with their season on the line. The Hurricanes’ unbeaten run came to an end with the loss to Georgia Tech, in which the quarterback <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cam-ward">Cam Ward</a> had a costly fumble that sealed the game. As Ward’s Heisman campaign was put on halt, NFL Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson drew a comparison between the Canes signal caller and the Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.



At first glance, being compared to the 2024 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> Draft’s first overall selection is not a bad look on Ward, quite the opposite. However, the legendary Dallas Cowboys head coach explained the downside on both players’ style.

“It’s like Caleb Williams. You’ve got to reel him in,” Johnson said, via The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “You got to say take your check downs. He makes some great plays by being off-platform and running around, he makes some great plays, but he also turns the ball over doing that. He’s got a great arm and may have the best arm in all of football, as far as collegiate football.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/miami-hurricanes">Hurricanes</a> finally got over the hump and put on a full season, though they are still one win away from their goal: making the ACC Title game. Mario Cristobal’s program has Ward to thank for it. The transfer from Washington State had an immediate impact in Coral Gables and the statistics support this claim.



Through eleven games, Ward has completed 67.2% of his passes, amassing 3,774 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Miami’s QB was considered a Heisman Trophy candidate, but his momentum seems to have waned. The race now appears to be a two-horse sprint between Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty.



The biggest knock on Ward is his tendency to hold onto the ball. Similarly to Caleb Williams, Ward tends to scramble around looking for the big play downfield, which has come back to bite him throughout the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season. Ward has been sacked 21 times this year. A good portion of that number could’ve been reduced if the QB got rid of the football faster.



As <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/caleb-williams">Williams</a> is discovering with the Bears, the scrambling, gunslinger style might not be the smartest or most effective approach, especially for a rookie in the NFL.

Cam Ward has become the talk of the town since his arrival in Miami, he has put on a stellar <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> season and is among the Heisman Trophy favorites. Though the loss in Atlanta didn’t do Miami any favors, the Hurricanes still control their destiny. Winning is a must. The last ACC games of the season are crucial to Cristobal’s program, they have to win both of them and they’ll clinch a place in the conference championship match.

<h2>Cristobal makes big statement on Xavier Restrepo</h2>



Xavier Restrepo has become the best wideout in the Hurricanes program. And it’s not particularly close, he leads the team in receptions, yards, and touchdown catches (55-934-10). Since Ward arrived in Miami from Washington State, the QB-WR duo got into a rhythym and have become a top threat in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a>.

As Ward is among the favorites to the Heisman Trophy and considered a top QB prospect, Restrepo deserves much credit for becoming Miami’s most reliable target. Cristobal acknowledged ‘X’s’ impact on the team and sent him a special message.



“He means the world of the program, and the program means the world to him. He is the epitome of hard work. I think he’s grown up a ton. That’s the biggest thing, the maturity levels of X, over the past eight, nine, ten months, being all about team and making sure that he does everything possible to affect teammates has really been just incredibly, just awesome to watch.“

The Miami Hurricanes are gearing up for their return to action against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Miami is coming off a bye week and their first loss on the season. They must get back in the win column, in order to stay alive in the hunt for an ACC Championship appearance. The Canes need their top players to make an impact, that’s why Mario Cristobal sent a special message to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cam-ward">Cam Ward</a>‘s favorite target.



Xavier Restrepo is the clear-cut WR1 in Cristobal’s program and leads the team in receiving yards, by a landslide. The second-year senior has hit it off with QB Cam Ward since the latter’s arrival to Coral Gables. Through ten games in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season, Restrepo and Ward have connected for 55 receptions, 934 yards, and 10 touchdowns.



Cristobal is well aware of the positive impact this duo has on the offense and will need them to be at their best when the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/miami-hurricanes">Hurricanes</a> host the Demon Deacons on November 23.

<h2>Miami is left with no margin of error</h2>



The Clemson Tigers prevailed on their last ACC game of the season, improving their league record to 7-1. Therefore, Miami must win both of their remaining two games: against Wake Forest and Syracuse, to tie Clemson’s conference record and overlap them thanks to the advantage on the tiebreaker.

The alternative for Miami requires the Hurricanes to win out, or at least prevail in one of its remaining matchups, and SMU to drop one or both of its final two games of the year, both within league-play. Winning the ACC is the easiest way for the Canes to punch their ticket for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">College Football</a> Playoffs.

The upsetting loss to Georgia Tech left the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/miami-hurricanes">Miami Hurricanes</a> with no margin of error. The Hurricanes must win-out in order to clinch a berth in the ACC title game, and thus the stakes are ever-high for Mario Cristobal’s program. On that note, the head coach sent a strong message to QB Cam Ward on what he expects to see during their next outing.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cam-ward">Cam Ward</a> is a top-candidate for the Heisman Trophy and his stats, as well as his tape, help solidify his case. However, after the Hurricanes lost to the Yellow Jackets and thus, their perfect season came to an abrupt end, many fingers pointed at Ward’s costly fumble that sealed the win for Georgia Tech.



However, Cristobal has stated he still has the utmost confidence on his star quarterback and has issued a challenge for Ward as Miami embarks on a bye week ahead of their game against Wake Forest on November 23.



“If the result of the game changes you, you never were what you said you were,” Cristobal said, per On3. “I don’t think he changes. He never has changed. … I have 100% belief in him and everybody on the team. That’s the biggest point of emphasis. Again, it stinks. It absolutely stinks. But 100% belief in everyone, and we got to go back to work and get better.”

<h2>Former Heisman winner sends Ward, Miami strong warning</h2>



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">College football</a> icon Johnny Manziel voiced his thoughts on the school in Coral Gables and sent Ward and rest of the team a strong warning on their narrow victories and late dramatics.

“It’s just how many times are they gonna get away with this in these close games? That’s just a recipe for disaster,” Manziel stated. “It could have happened multiple times, and it’s a little bit of a pattern, of what they’ve been as a team. It’s like they come alive whenever they’re down 7 points and have to come back.



“You’re gonna run into a team in the College Football Playoff who’s not gonna let up, and you’re not gonna be able to come back from the deficit.”



Manziel hasn’t lost faith in Miami making the Playoffs, but has warned the program about the fierce <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> competition they’ll come across in late December and January.



<h2>ACC Championship’s hopes are still intact</h2>



The Hurricanes’ fate is in their hands. The Canes must win their last two games (both within league play) and they will be in the Conference Final. If they only manage to win one game, then Miami will need Clemson to drop its final ACC match against Pittsburgh this Saturday.



Miami is currently in a bye week, so when they next step into the field they’ll already know what results they need to make the ACC title game. The other possibility relies on SMU losing at least two of its final three league games (against: Boston College, Virginia, and California).
