Even for Gretzky, who is hands down the most famous NHL superstar in history, being above Howe was nothing short of an honor. 



“I think we’re all in pretty much in agreement that Gordie was pretty special,” Gretzky stated, per ESPN. “These two guys here are pretty special also, and we all have so much respect for what Gordie did and what he accomplished. It’s not a bad thing to be named in the top 100 behind a guy like Gordie Howe. I think we all feel the same way.”



<h2>Howe’s accolades</h2>



Over his longevous career in the NHL, Gordie Howe pulled off the unthinkable time and time again, and therefore, when he stepped off the ice he left an impressive resume behind. Howe played in 1,767 games (only surpassed by Patrick Marleau’s 1,779), scoring 801 goals, and registering 1,049 assists for a grand-total of 1,850 points. Howe didn’t shy away from the penalty box, either as he totalled 1,685 penalty minutes.



Howe experienced plenty of team success, as well. During his career, Howe hoisted Lord Stanley four times, and led the Detroit Red Wings to seven consecutive first place finishes in the regular season from 1949 to 1955, a feat no other team has ever replicated.

Undoubtedly, Howe’s impact in today’s NHL is still felt all over the league. Not just for the Red Wings, Mr. Hockey is a symbol of resilience and love for the game to every player and team. While the younger generations watch on the superstars as insipiration, Gretzky revealed Gordie Howe was who he wanted to be growing up.

Patience is running out in Motor City. The Detroit Red Wings have gotten off to a terrible first half of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season and have made a big decision before their playoffs chances slip away.



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Red Wings</a> have missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in its last eight seasons. Fans are desperate for success as the team’s core looks promising every season, but is unable to get over the hump. It’s become a tendency in Mo-town, lots of talk during the offseason, but production runs short when it’s go-time.



The Red Wings have many stars in their roster, with the likes of Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, Patrick Kane, and Lucas Raymond, however, they seem to be lacking what it takes to make the postseason year after year. 



Through 34 games in the 2024-25 NHL season, Detroit is sitting in second-to-last place in the Atlantic Division with a 13-17-4 record. The Red Wings were headed in a grim alley, so General Manager Steven Yzerman stepped in to make a critical decision.

Detroit announced a coaching change, in hopes of turning their lackluster season around. The Red Wings have moved on from Derek Lalonde, naming Todd McLellan as head coach.

“Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman today announced that the team has named Todd McLellan as the 29th Head Coach in franchise history and signed him to a multi-year contract,” the team stated.



<h2>Familiar face behind the bench</h2>



Under head coach Mike Babcock in 2005, Todd McLellan served as an assistant coach for the Red Wings. He was tasked with handling the Red Wings’ forwards and managing the team’s power play, which became the top-ranked power play in the NHL. In 2008, McLellan won his first Stanley Cup as assistant coach with Detroit.



McLellan returns to Mo-town after coaching the Los Angeles Kings since February 2019. Despite signing a contract extension with the Kings in 2023, McLellan was fired by the Kings in February 2024. He is now back behind the home bench at Little Caesars Arena.



Detroit hopes McLellan can get this team running once they return to the ice on December 27 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Red Wings are eight points behind the last wildcard berth and will need a strong stretch prior to the Four-Nations Faceoff break to get back in the mix for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

McLellan faces a tall order as he is expected to snap the team’s postseason hex. Detroit last played a Stanley Cup Playoff game during the 2015-16 season.

Following the victory in overtime, Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov called out Detroit forward Lucas Raymond after tensions flared between the two players during the game.



Zadorov is a very physical player in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>, standing at 6’6” and weighing 248lb he has more than enough reasons to put his body on the line every night. The Bruins’ defenseman doesn’t shy away from contact and taking penalties. However, he wasn’t appreciattive of Raymond’s embellishment after a slash.



He responded with a cross-check to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Red Wings</a> star and a scuffle broke out. Despite the overtime win, thanks to Pavel Zacha’s goal, Zadorov didn’t let the incident slide and he sent a very strong message to Detroit’s youngster.



“I think that’s got to get out of the league. It’s a man’s league,” Zadorov said, via BosHockeyNow. “We all get slashed. We’re all in pain, but you don’t go like this and show the referee you get slashed.

<h2>Interim coach Joe Sacco talks on Zadorov’s performance</h2>



Zadorov scored a goal and registered six penalty minutes during the 3-2 triumph over Detroit. The 29-year-old now tallies two goals and six assists on the season. After the game, coach Joe Sacco issued a big statement on his performance.



“He was engaged in the game tonight,” Bruins interim head coach Joe Sacco commented on Zadorov. “He was physical, and he was just defending hard tonight. When he was on the ice, the opposition knew that he was playing, and the goal was good, too. We’d like to see more of that.”



<h2>Bruins’ mentality change under Coach Sacco</h2>



Boston has looked like a different team since Jim Montgomery’s firing. Under interim coach Joe Sacco, the Bruins have won five of their last seven games and are looking confident again. Zadorov made a bold statement about what’s changed in Beantown.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Boston Red Wings</a> started strong, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to two goals from Lucas Raymond. However, the Bruins weren’t intimidated and began to press hard in the second and third periods.



Zadorov scored for the Bruins in the first period, and in the third, Kiviranta and Brazeau both found the back of the net, tying the score. Finally, it was Zacha who sealed the victory with a precise shot that caught the Red Wings’ goalkeeper by surprise.



“[Pastrnak] was really good on the forecheck,” Zacha said via NHL.com. “I saw they had two guys, so even if he couldn’t get it, I was there to help out. But you know, he made a great play and won the battle, and that was really important. It’s why we scored.”

“This is a tough league to win in, regardless of the type of game,” Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco said. “It wasn’t a clean game, either side. It was a low-event game for a while; the second period got a little interesting with penalties. … You just stay with it in these types of games. You try not to deviate from what you’re trying to implement, and the guys with the game plan stay with it, and for the most part, we did that.”

<h3>A Painful Defeat for the Red Wings</h3>



On the other hand, the Red Wings suffered a painful defeat, marking their fourth consecutive loss. Despite having moments of good play, they couldn’t keep up the pace and let the victory slip away.



“It’s frustrating because we’re doing a lot of good things,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “We keep getting points; again, that’s points in six of the last eight games. It’s a pretty good pace, but I think there are stretches in our game where we play really well, and you’ve got to want it more. But we self-inflict mistakes.”

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-kane">Patrick Kane</a> has been sidelined since November 23 after sustaining an upper-body injury during the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. As the Red Wings prepare for a crucial two-game road trip against Atlantic Division opponents, head coach Derek Lalonde hopes to count on the 36-year-old forward in the lineup.



Patience is running short in Mo-town. The Red Wings haven’t gotten off to a great start in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season and they sit in sixth place in the division. Detroit has missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in its last eight seasons. 



The passage of time has not been kind to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/detroit-red-wings">Red Wings</a>, who last made the postseason in the 2015-16 season. During the 2016-17 campaign, Detroit’s 25-year playoff streak came to an end, giving way to a new streak—for all the wrong reasons.



Fans in Motor City are desperate for success and Steve Yzerman’s seat only continues to heat up with every frustrating season. However, it’s still early for the Red Wings to give up on their current season, and though they are not looking good they may find their mojo with the return of star Patrick Kane.

“Patrick Kane is trending to be back on Tuesday in Boston,” head coach Derek Lalonde stated.

Detroit faces a unique opportunity to narrow their gap behind the Atlantic Division’s leaders. While Florida and Toronto have pulled slightly ahead, the middle of the standings is jam-packed, with five teams separated by just five points.



The Red Wings face Boston on Tuesday and Ottawa on Thursday, both on the road. Winning these games would be fantastic for Detroit as they head back home to take on Colorado, before hitting the road once again, and against divisional rival, the Buffalo Sabres.



The regular season is very long, and the key to success is stringing together good streaks, preferably against direct opponents. Up next, the Red Wings have the chance to do exactly that. They hope to have one of the best players in history available, but in the worst-case scenario, the roster will need to push through and secure some important road wins.



<h2>Goaltending depth put to the test</h2>



Detroit’s goaltending room has been affected by an injury bug recently. Cam Talbot exited the game during the 5-4 loss to the Vancouver Canucks with a lower-body injury. He is considered day-to-day, but it’s unclear whether he will travel with the team during the upcoming road stretch.



This injury piles on to Alex Lyon’s who remains out and has been confirmed by Lalonde to be inactive during the roadtrip. Depending on the extent of Talbot’s injury, the Red Wings may have to call up either prospect Sebastian Cossa or veteran Jack Campbell. Both are with Detroit’s AHL affiliate. For the time being, Ville Husso will take sole property of the Red Wings’ crease.
