<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Connor Bedard</a> put up a two-point performance but it wasn’t enough. The Chicago Blackhawks fell in overtime to the Minnesota Wild by a final score of 4-3. After suffering their fourth straight loss in the 2025-26 NHL season, the young star on the team delivered a strong message to head coach Jeff Blashill and company.



Growing up is never easy. There are several pains that come with it. For Bedard and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blackhawks</a>, the story isn’t any different. Chicago boasts the third-youngest roster in the NHL—per Elite Prospects—and the squad’s inexperience has shown time and again in the 2025-26 campaign. After yet another narrow-margin loss to a red-hot team like <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/minnesota-wild" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Minnesota</a>, Bedard made his frustration visible with a blunt comment.



“It [stinks],” Bedard admitted postgame per NHL.com. “I thought we played a pretty good game, but just little mistakes that we’ll clean up. Overall, I thought there were a lot of positives to take away. But in the end, obviously you’ve got to come out with the two [points].”

On the other hand, though, the Hawks have had no luck closing out games. Luck tends to favor the other side, as Chicago seems to lose almost exclusively in one-goal games. It’s all part of being a rebuilding team in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a>. The Blackhawks are still wet behind the ears. Most seem to have made their peace with this fact, as it’s all part of the learning process.

However, with Bedard registering the best numbers of his career (33 points through 23 games) and looking for a seat at the grown man’s table, the constant heartbreaking losses are taking a toll on him. Far from giving up, the former first overall pick is determined to keep the Hawks afloat in the current best division in all of the NHL: the Central Division.



<h2>Blashill admits this game serves as a lesson</h2>



No player ever enters the NHL in hopes of learning. If they were after that, then most would opt to stay in college. However, whether they are enrolling in these classes willingly or not, the league is quick to teach youngsters what it takes to win. On that note, even <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blashill</a> admitted the loss to the Wild—who have now won six games in a row—serves that purpose.

“Yeah, it’s tough. You’re going to win that game more than not but it’s part of the learning process for us,” Blashill commented after the overtime defeat at home, via NHL.com. “I thought there were times throughout the year we did a good job of either coming back or winning those close games. 



“Now, we’ve given up a couple of leads here in the last few games. I’m glad we’re in that spot, but part of the learning process is to find a way to make sure there’s no way to lose that game. We played too good to lose it. That’s what we’re trying to figure out here.”



Blashill made sure to remind Bedard and company that he is getting tired of being taught lessons. Now, the Hawks must find ways to be in charge of class from time to time. If there is something Blashill knows by heart, it’s that the student can always surpass the master.

On a brighter note, Bedard put on another strong performance in his third season in the league. “The thing I’d say about Connor is his compete every single day is outstanding,” Blashill said per <a href="https://www.nhl.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL.com</a>. “I asked him at the beginning of the year, as one of the better players on the team, to be a great leader in terms of playing winning hockey, and he’s done that consistently.”



<h2>Not always pretty</h2>



Bedard and Nazar lead the way for Chicago with their electric playstyle. When the two youngsters in The Second City are firing on all cylinders, they deliver highlight-reel moments all night long. However, the NHL is too demanding an environment for these young bucks to dominate night in and night out.

“[When] both teams are clogging that up, it makes it hard,” Blashill concluded, via Chicago Sun-Times. “Games are hard, man. It’s not going to be a lot of free-flowing [hockey]. You’ve got to really earn your offense. Sometimes you need some ugly ones, and we just didn’t get quite enough pucks through.”



More often than not, it takes an all-out effort and some grinding rather than dangling and playing hero hockey. Blashill noted that the team must be able to adapt to what the game calls for—it may not be as flashy, but it’s effective. Right now, Chicago needs efficiency more than beauty on the ice.

Youth can be both a weapon and a burden, but the Hawks are taking their chances. It’s a risky cocktail, but one Bedard and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blackhawks</a> vie to pull off. So far in the NHL season, Chicago has shown it can hold its ground against any team in the league.



So far, all of Chicago’s losses have come in one-score games. The Blackhawks don’t go down without a fight either, earning a point in two of those defeats. While learning to close out games and win tight matchups is a must, Bedard remains confident those lessons will come in time.



“We’re all confident in ourselves individually and ourselves as a team. We’re going into every game with that mindset,” Bedard stated per <a href="https://www.nhl.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">NHL.com</a>. “If we were [without a win] right now it would be something we’d have to work through, but to get a couple of wins and see some good results is great. That’s something we need to keep going.”

<h2>The new duo</h2>



Ever since selecting Connor Bedard with the first overall pick in the 2023 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a> entry Draft, a big question floated around the Windy City: Who will help the wonderkid out? <h2>What if…</h2>



For the Blackhawks, the only issue is that both Bedard and Nazar are natural centermen. However, in times of need, the young duo can share the ice on the top unit. If it comes down to it, Blashill may treat fans to an all-out approach by playing the team’s two best players on the same line. 



So far this season, Bedard and Nazar are tied for the team lead in points (seven each). Even if all goes bad, there’s a silver lining for fans in Chicago in Blashill’s first year behind the bench, and that is watching the two first-rounders thrive.

If <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chicago</a> gets carried away after every big win and deflated after tough losses, Bedard and company are in for a rollercoaster of a year. That’s why Blashill is taking a calm, cool, and collected approach. Neither the peaks are too high nor the valleys too low. For the Blackhawks, it’s all about staying the course.



It’s easy to enter a season with that mindset, but to actually maintain it after experiencing big wins like Chicago’s 8-3 triumph in The Lou, that’s when it counts. Blashill kept his word, issuing a firm statement to Bedard and the Hawks.



“Obviously, we got a couple goals early,” Blashill admitted. “Obviously, on the puck play and then the one they’d like to have back, but in the first, we were fine. They’re a good team. They probably didn’t have their best night.

<h2>Back on track</h2>



After a concerning sophomore slump during his second season in the NHL, Bedard is showing flashes of his best self again. His showing against the Blues on the road was a sign that the 20-year-old is finding his mojo back in the league.



Bedard registered three assists during Chicago’s win in St. Louis. It was only the second time in his career that he factored in on three or more goals in a single game. The last time he achieved that milestone was during his rookie campaign, when he recorded four assists in a 7-2 triumph over the Anaheim Ducks.

Following the loss to the Florida Panthers in the 2025-26 NHL season opener, the new bench boss in the Windy City voiced a firm message.



Beating the Panthers on the night their second Stanley Cup banner headed to the rafters was never going to be easy. It would’ve been the perfect opportunity for Bedard, Blashill, and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blackhawks</a> to make a statement, but it wasn’t to be.



Regardless, the Hawks went toe-to-toe with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/nhl-teams-back-to-back-stanley-cup-wins" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">back-to-back Stanley Cup champions</a>. A one-goal loss to start the NHL campaign isn’t the worst possible outcome for the young Blackhawks. Still, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Blashill</a> voiced a stern comment after the game in Sunrise, Florida.



“It is such an unforgiving league that you have to be on top of your game every night,” Blashill said, per Chicago Sun-Times. “You’re not going to be perfect — I get that — but you can’t let the lows be so low. Certainly, there’s some guys that need to take that lesson. That’s their takeaway.”

<h2>Back to work</h2>



Coaching a young team like Chicago’s was always going to present challenges for Blashill. The Blackhawks boast the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NHL</a>’s third-youngest roster, with an average age around 26. Only Montreal and Buffalo feature younger lineups.

<h2>Work in progress</h2>



With youth comes boldness—like Chicago showed going after the reigning champions on the road—but inexperience is also part of the package. The latter showed at some bad moments for the Hawks during their debut. Bedard and the Blackhawks are, by every definition, a work in progress.



Taking down the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Panthers</a> in Sunrise would’ve been an ideal start, but it wouldn’t have meant as much—just like the loss doesn’t have to be bigger than it is. The Chicago Blackhawks have seemingly accepted that what’s done is done, but <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard">Connor Bedard</a> would love to have last NHL season back. After a rookie year for the ages, the former first overall pick struggled throughout the 2024–25 campaign. Now, Jeff Blashill has taken over behind the bench and is assigning former interim head coach Anders Sorensen to a role somewhat removed from Bedard.



The past season is behind the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> and that’s where everybody in Chicago wants it to stay. A distant memory, one which is now starting to get lost in the rearview mirror. Thankfully, the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season is slowly approaching. Still, fans in the Windy City have learned to be careful what they wish for.



Now, a new day is starting to rise on the horizon. Blashill is the new head coach for Bedard and the rest of the team, who have grown used to seeing different managers come and go. Fortunately, they will see a familiar face in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/anders-sorensen">Sorensen</a>, who, relieved of his interim head coach duties, is now an assistant.



On that note, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill">Blashill</a> and the Blackhawks announced which department each assistant coach will focus on. Sorensen, as it turns out, won’t be in charge of Bedard and the forwards—quite the opposite.

“New assistants Michael Peca and Mike Vellucci will oversee the forwards, with Peca also coaching the penalty kill and Vellucci the power play. Anders Sorensen will oversee the defensemen — a role he previously held in Rockford,” as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. “Long-tenured goalie coach Jimmy Waite retained his position.“

<h2>Crucial role</h2>



Sorensen has been at the helm of the defensemen group before, but this time the stakes are higher. The former interim coach did occupy a similar role back during his time with the AHL’s affiliate, the Rockford Ice-Hogs. However, the Blackhawks’ D-corps is a different beast.



As it stands, out of Chicago’s six active blueliners, five are less than 25 years old. Connor Murphy is the lone veteran with 32 years of age. Blashill knows the team’s youth is a double-edged sword, but he plans to face only the sharp end of one side.



<h2>Winning habits</h2>



“The reality is our growth will be based on how quickly our young guys mature,” Blashill told the Chicago Sun-Times. “[Not only] how they mature physically, but more importantly, how their games mature. Go from a young, talented group to a group that plays winning hockey. The most exciting opportunity we have as a coaching staff is to mold our players into winning players as quickly as possible.”

Of course, it takes time to build a winning culture, and the team must walk a road full of bumps and bruises. However, the Hawks have already experienced enough of hockey’s painful side.

With their minds focused entirely on entering a new stage of their rebuild, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> have no time to worry about off-the-ice antics. Bedard and company need all the time they can get to settle in on the ice and start showing results.

He’s entering a locker room that has seen several coaching staffs come and go on short notice. The team’s identity has been more of a waxing-and-waning façade than a consistent style of play. In Chicago, fans are used to strong winds—but lately, it feels like those winds have been blowing against the Hawks, keeping them from moving forward.



Therefore, the Blackhawks looked to avoid legal trouble with backup goaltender Arvid Soderblom. Keeping the Spencer Knight–Arvid Soderblom tandem was pivotal, and after weeks of uncertainty—and looming legal concerns—Chicago finally reached an agreement.

“Soderblom signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, avoiding an arbitration hearing. It has an average annual value of $2.75 million,” as reported by NHL.com.

While fans hoped Kyle Davidson and the front office would be more aggressive during free agency, it seems the Blackhawks are rolling with a very similar roster into the 2025-26 season. Fans might disapprove, but Bedard is not too worried about it.



“I think it makes sense. We’re in a spot where a lot of our young guys — Frank [Nazar], myself, Sammy [Rinzel], you go down the list — all feel like we can take a step as a group,” Bedard admitted, via Chicago Sun-Times. “It gives a lot of guys opportunities to come into camp and earn a spot on the team, have an impact and learn. 



“That being said, we’re not going to not have any expectations. We’re going to try to win every game and be confident in every guy in the room. It’s exciting for us to start that together and grow together over the next however many years.”

<h2>Pending business</h2>



As it stands, the Blackhawks’ roster is all but set going into training camp and the NHL preseason. However, there is one piece of business left to be taken care of. Restricted free agent (RFA) Wyatt Kaiser remains without a contract.

Under Jeff Blashill, the Chicago Blackhawks might be doing just that—possibly moving on from a teammate of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard">Connor Bedard</a>, who hasn’t quite panned out in the NHL.



Changes are brewing in Chicago. For better or worse—that remains to be seen—new winds are blowing through Chi-City. Bedard and company are certainly hoping clear skies lie ahead, but that’s not something <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill">Blashill</a> and his staff can promise just yet.



It’s been a quiet offseason so far in the Windy City, but perhaps not for long. As recently hinted, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> might be working on a trade, seemingly giving up on one of Bedard’s teammates.



According to reports around the league, Lukas Reichel’s time in Chicago could have its days numbered, as the Blackhawks steer in a different direction. At the very least, they are entertaining the possibility of a new beginning for the young forward.

“Teams have been calling about Reichel and the Blackhawks have been listening,” as reported by The Fourth Period. “Chicago is looking to package assets for immediate upgrades.”

<h2>Unfulfilled potential</h2>



A former first round selection in the 2020 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> entry Draft, Reichel has had trouble adapting to the league. Chicago’s rough years since the turn of the decade weren’t too helpful, either.



So far, Reichel has played in 169 games registering only 20 goals and 34 assists (54 points). This past season, the 23-year-old winger posted career-highs in goals (8), assists (14), and points (22), yet those are still not the numbers the Hawks expect from the former 17th overall pick.

<h2>One exit is enough</h2>



While the Blackhawks might have made up their minds about Reichel, they have no intention to destroy the young core led by Bedard. On that note, reaching an agreement with RFA Arvid Soderblom is a must. However, time’s at a premium and the clock is ticking.



As announced by the NHL, the salary arbitration hearing for the 25-year-old goaltender will take place on July 28. As it stands, Chicago has less than five days to find some common ground with the Swedish netminder, or a third-party will intervene.

Spencer Knight will be the team’s starter, but the Hawks will still need a backup to fill in every now and then—and Soderblom can do that just as well as any. The ball is in Chicago’s court, but what will Kyle Davidson and company do with that responsibility?

On that note, reports indicate the organization is reaching an agreement with one of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard">Connor Bedard</a>‘s teammates.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill">Blashill</a> is hoping to enter the Blackhawks’ locker room at United Center with winds of change blowing all throughout the city. In a town globally renowned for its powerful breeze, the Hawks want to feel it finally blowing in their favor.



Bedard and the rest of the team will be up for a big test. The challenge won’t get any easier for a squad that has only gotten younger, yet hasn’t added any NHL star to its ranks. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> made their stance clear: this is who they’re rolling with. They extended some key players and mostly called it a day, making only a few minor moves — nothing ground-breaking.



<h2>Soderblom’s future</h2>



However, after restricted free agent (RFA) Arvid Soderblom filed for salary arbitration, Blashill and the Hawks were put against the wall. Now it’s up to them and the front office to either work out a deal with the goaltender or let an <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> arbitrator bring down the hammer and determine the proper compensation for the 25-year-old netminder. There’s always another option: letting Soderblom become a UFA — but that’s seemingly not within the realm of possibilities for Chicago.

“The Blackhawks have over $21 million in cap space, so it is likely they will settle with Soderblom on a one-year deal,” Michael Augello reported on The Hockey News.

<h2>Depth in net</h2>



Obviously, the Blackhawks intend to keep Soderblom in town. Still, they have other options to resort to if the salary arbitration saga ends badly. Recently, Chicago signed goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy to a two-year entry-level contract. Such a signing might have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/nhl-news-connor-bedards-blackhawks-secure-plan-b-in-case-things-turn-south-amid-legal-dispute-with-goaltender">secured a plan B in case things turn south with Soderblom</a>.



Moreover, Chicago boasts two NHL-ready netminders. Spencer Knight, acquired at last season’s trade deadline, is slated to be the team’s starter. Hope remains for Knight to be the number one goalie for a very long time.

It’s looking even more utopic, though, as Kane recently signed a one-year extension in Detroit. Regardless, the two sides will be linked forever. On that note, Kane issued a sincere statement on Connor Bedard, the Blackhawks current state, and how Jeff Blashill could unlock the young star’s next level in the 2025-26 NHL season.



Just like Bedard, Kane was selected with a first overall pick by the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a>. While dubbed an elite prospect, Kane may not have been at Bedard’s level coming into the league. However, everybody knows how that pick turned out and the legacy the winger has left in Chicago.



Kane knows firsthand what <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-bedard">Bedard</a> has faced since his NHL debut. While social media adds a layer of pressure for Bedard, that Kane never had to deal with early on, the intensity on the ice remains almost identical. Both players stand 5’10”, and although Bedard currently plays center and Kane is a winger, that positional difference might not last much longer.



While enjoying his offseason back in the city where he cemented his NHL legacy, Kane discussed a variety of themes. From his present in Detroit, the Blackhawks under Blashill, and Bedard’s future, to many more topics surrounding the organization in the Windy City. <h2>Kane’s statement</h2>



“I wouldn’t have any worry or concern about [Bedard]. Yeah, maybe [a move to the wing would help him]. For me, I was a smaller player. The demand is a little bit easier compared to a center,” Kane said in dialogue with ESPN Chicago. “I think it’s beneficial to play different positions and kind of learn everything.

“So, yeah, maybe. I don’t know what the Blackhawks had planned for him for his career. I don’t want to say you want to play him with defensive guys, but with some responsible players who can play both ways. All of a sudden, that helps him out.”



<h2>Adversity</h2>



Much talk has grown around Bedard, mostly after a rough sophomore campaign in which he couldn’t build on his Calder Trophy-winning rookie season in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>.



As deflating as it might be, it’s all part of adjusting to the big leagues, something a 19-year-old like Bedard had no time to do. Since being drafted in 2023, he was almost on autopilot, and he can now truly begin to learn what it takes to be successful.



“It’s a tough league to get adjusted to. I went through my growing pains, a lot of these guys that play right away don’t have those extra years to develop. Don’t think there’s any concern about him,” Kane added. “He’s got a great career ahead of him.“

<h2>A new icon in the Windy City</h2>



The Blackhawks want nothing more than to leave behind the past few years, which have been marked by disheartening defeats and constant bumps and bruises. To do so, Chicago must establish its core — and keeping Bedard for the long haul is the first, and most important, brick to lay. In that regard, Kane has no reason to believe Bedard wants to be anywhere other than the United Center.

While the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/chicago-blackhawks">Blackhawks</a> believe the starting crease is Spencer Knight’s to lose, they still have high hopes for Soderblom. The 25-year-old goalie showed signs of growth last season after some inconsistent years and is now seeking the contract he feels he has earned. On that note, Chicago reportedly has a clear plan in place for Bedard and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jeff-blashill">Blashill</a>‘s key teammate.



“The Blackhawks will work out Soderblom’s contract one way or another, whether it’s through arbitration or not,” per The Athletic’s Scott Powers. “The key for the Blackhawks will be not committing too much term to him just yet. While he had a bounce-back season, the Blackhawks will want to see a larger sample size before handing him a larger deal.”

<h2>Not repeating history</h2>



Once bitten, the Blackhawks are twice shy. After chasing several veterans in last year’s NHL offseason, Chicago is now taking a completely different path. It seems the organization in the Windy City has opted to stay parked at the side of the road rather than risk another wrong turn. General manager Kyle Davidson chose a quiet free agency, sending a clear message to Bedard and the rest of the team.

“The Blackhawks weren’t exactly thrilled with how things went with some of their veterans last season and just decided they’re not doing that again. I’m not surprised they were pretty quiet,” insider Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

“I don’t think there’s any concern about him,” Kane said about Bedard during an interview on ESPN Chicago. “I think he’s got a great career ahead of him. He sounds like he wants to be a Blackhawk for a long time. I think they got a bright future ahead and he’s going to lead it. He’s going to get better and better with time, he looks like a kid that really wants to get better.”
