Belichick banned <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-england-patriots">Patriots</a> scouts from Chapel Hill, preventing them from attending the Tar Heels’ practices throughout the 2025 NCAA season. The six-time Super Bowl–winning head coach doubled down on his decision at the time, saying, “It’s clear I’m not welcome at their facility, so they’re not welcome at ours.”

With his resume, Belichick is considered a favorite to become a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

It’s time for Belichick and company to put it in the backburner and move on.



However, a report around <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> hints Belichick’s past might come back to bite him. Namely, his dispute with Kraft and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-england-patriots">Patriots</a>, the NFL franchise with which Belichick won six Super Bowls as head coach. Still, there is no love left for the organization in Foxborough—or at least, that’s how it seems.



“Bill Belichick hasn’t been very accommodating to NFL scouts. And I was told by multiple people, that he has banned the New England Patriots,” John Middlekauff said on the 3 and Out podcast.

Ironically, the Patriots’ starting quarterback and messiah, Drake Maye, is a product of UNC, so it’s interesting to see the school close the doors on the organization that is now looking after its alumni. Moreover, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football/bill-belichick-makes-10m-at-unc-how-much-does-sonny-dykes-earn-at-tcu">Belichick makes $10 million a year in North Carolina.</a> Needless to say, the school isn’t exactly thrilled to see him use his position to execute personal vendettas.

However, Middlekauff believes it’s not the best look on the head coach.



“To ban the Patriots is like an ‘F— you’ to Robert Kraft. Guess what Kraft’s not doing? He’s not ever making a school call in his life,” Middlekauff commented. “He’s never going to any of these universities. It’s just some random guy going to the school.”

From the get-go, Belichick’s time in Chapel Hill has been marred by off-the-field controversies. From Jordon Hudson’s loud presence on campus to the speculation surrounding Belichick’s buyout clause, it always felt like once the college football season started it would all tone down.

“The last two years were the worst years of my 31 years of ownership,” Kraft told Adam Schefter of ESPN. “We have to change that. We have a new coach in Mike Vrable who is really connected with the players, who is doing great work. We have a young quarterback and a lot of great veterans — free agent veterans who came in. A great draft class. We’re gonna have fun this year, I promise.”

Apparently, he reached out to Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank to warn him about Belichick’s character, and that was a deal-breaker in their interest in his services:



“But in a conversation with Blank, Kraft delivered a stark assessment of Belichick’s character, according to a source who spoke to two people: a close Kraft friend and a longtime Belichick confidant. The source quoted the Belichick source as saying, ‘Robert called Arthur to warn him not to trust Bill.’ That account was backed up, the source said, by the close Kraft friend,” read the report.



Belichick reportedly told the Falcons that he didn’t want to be in control of all decisions. He was willing to play ball and be a team worker, which was one of the things that scared most things away from even approaching him.



Kraft told Blank that he would never have a close relationship with an arrogant man like Belichick. They went with Raheem Morris instead, and Belichick might not even get another chance to coach in the league.

“I think we’ve got someone very special who understands how to manage young people today,” Kraft said, via Pro Football Talk. “I mean, the world is different than 20 years ago — even 10 years ago. And in all our businesses, we try to create a culture that people want to stay with and be there long-term. And I think that Jerod has the makeup and the chemistry — and it’s genuine, what he has is genuine. Just think about how he got elected captain in his second year with us when we had tremendous veterans. And I think it went for seven years, he was captain in a tremendous period. And then he went out on his own in business to get a change. It’s just, I think we’re ready to kick butt.”



Mayo spent his entire playing career in Foxborough from 2008 to 2015, winning a Super Bowl and making the Pro Bowl twice. He returned to the Patriots in 2019 to join Belichick’s staff, and now has been chosen to replace the most successful coach in franchise history.



<h2>Robert Kraft didn’t want to have another regret</h2>



The truth is the team had already envisioned this scenario long ago, as Mayo’s contract with the organization included a head-coaching succession clause to allow the Patriots to promote him quickly in the event Belichick left.

That’s why, even though Patriot Hall of Famer and former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel looked like a great fit, Mayo has always been Kraft’s only option in a scenario where Belichick was no longer at the helm.

“We think a little differently than our competitors and we try to do what’s right for our system,” Kraft said. In the press conference, the Patriots owner also recalled a lesson he learned from not trusting his instincts in the past.



“I like to think strategically, what’s best for the long-term, not [wanting] to do things that are going to require quick decisions. And we’re willing to do things that are unorthodox and it’s worked out pretty well for us over the last 50 years. Because of his loyalty to a man we had such difficulty with, who did a great job for us, but he took another job when we were going to the Super Bowl — I just couldn’t bring someone in because trust is so important. But as I watched what happened, when he was with his next team, I realized I made a mistake, I should’ve gone with my instincts in ’96 and hired Bill. And that worked out petty well. Well, I have the same feeling now, having watched Jerod for 16 years in a lot of different situations.”

These comments didn’t make Kraft happy at all. Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard revealed a conversation with the team’s owner about this situation, and he sent a strong message to Belichick.

And I asked Robert about that, and I just want to quote him accurately. He says, ‘He [Belichick] has never come to me and not gotten everything he wanted from a cash-spending perspective. We have never set limits.’ And he further went on to say, ‘Money spending will never be the issue, I promise you, or I’ll sell the team.’ So that’s pretty definitive.“
