Juan Soto knows the New York Mets need all hands on deck to keep their strong start going, but after manager Carlos Mendoza’s latest comments about a player dealing with health issues, it’s possible the Mets could soon be down a man.

“He’s in pain. He was walking this morning still on crutches. He’s pretty sore, not able to put weight on it. He’s going to get treatment now and we’ll see where we’re at, but he’s in pain,” Mendoza said, referring again to Jose Siri’s condition.

When asked whether Juan Soto’s teammate could land on the IL, Mendoza didn’t rule it out. “It could be. I think we’ll have a conversation after the game or maybe tomorrow, but the way he’s feeling right now, it’s a potential IL,” he said, offering a more definitive tone than he did the day before.

Siri says the pain is real

On April 12, Jose Siri admitted the pain was intense, saying the impact felt like it went “straight to the bone.” Even though X-rays came back negative, Siri said he wasn’t too concerned at first — just that it was a hard hit, but nothing alarming.

So far in 2025, Siri has appeared in 10 games for the Mets with only 24 plate appearances. However, his projections remain strong: Baseball Reference expects him to log 460 plate appearances, 61 runs, 88 hits, 19 home runs, and a .210 batting average.

Soto needs Siri in the lineup

Siri is in his first season with the Mets, but like Soto, he’s coming off a career-best year — logging 448 plate appearances in his final season with the Rays. Soto, of course, also had a standout season with the Yankees before joining the Mets.
