Phillies eyeing two pitchers to boost support for Bryce Harper and teammates

The Philadelphia Phillies are determined to shore up their defense. While there have been flashes of strong work on the mound, overall pitching has been a weakness — and it’s putting extra pressure on Bryce Harper and his teammates, who could use more support in that area.

According to a report from Bob Nightengale, Harper’s Phillies are closely monitoring Ryan Helsley, a seven-year veteran who has been a reliable closer for the Cardinals since 2019, posting a career 2.66 ERA. However, the Phillies are reportedly unwilling to part with key prospects in a potential deal.

“The [Phillies], among other teams, already are keeping a close eye on Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley, who will likely be dealt by the trade deadline. Yet, the Phillies are adamant they will not include top prospects Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller in any trade,” Nightengale reported.

Phillies also scouting pitcher from China

In addition to Helsley, the Phillies are also tracking another arm overseas. They’re reportedly keeping a close watch on right-hander Hsu Jo-Hsi, who pitches for the Wei Chuan Dragons in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. According to Yahoo Sports Taiwan, Phillies’ Dave Dombrowski and other front office members are planning a trip to Taiwan to see him pitch in person.

“It is understood that the Philadelphia Phillies have established a priority evaluation plan for Hsu Jo-Hsi and intend to arrange for the team’s directors, general manager and head of the international scouting department to come to Taiwan in person to observe his pitching performance,” reported Wu Minxin.

Better pitching could be the key for Harper and the Phillies

The Phillies currently own a 4.16 team ERA — not among the MLB‘s worst — but they rank seventh in hits allowed with 244. That constant defensive load has made things tougher for Harper and his teammates, and better pitching could help unlock greater productivity at the plate for a number of struggling hitters.
