The Los Angeles Lakers came off a thrilling 118–116 win over the San Antonio Spurs, where Luka Doncic took full command of the game in the absence of LeBron James and Austin Reaves, outdueling a red-hot Victor Wembanyama who had been on a tear in the NBA.
A huge reason for the team’s success on Wednesday night was Doncic’s energy on the defensive end. Speaking with the media after the game, Doncic emphasized how communication and focus helped him elevate his play against the Spurs.
“I mean, first of all, it’s just communication,” he said. “Getting people in the right spots. A lot of times, I’m the low man, so I’ve got to communicate that and put people where they need to be. But then, just activity. I think it’s better, I’m more focused, and I’ve just got to keep going like that and stop fouling.”
He also spoke about the absence of James and Reaves. “I’m enjoying it very much playing with these guys,” Doncic said. “AR can’t play, we’re still missing Bron, so this team has big potential. Everybody steps on the court and gives their maximum. So it’s very enjoyable to play.”
The growth of Wembanyama, according to Doncic
Beyond overcoming key absences, Doncic also praised the Spurs’ rising star, recognizing Wembanyama’s rapid development and elite play early in the season.
“What is it, his third year in the NBA? And he’s playing at an MVP level, which is insane,” Doncic said. “I have much respect for him, much love. And I really enjoy these games. Playing against him is very tough.
“Guarding him and going against him on offense is very tough, but I think he’s going to keep improving. It’s always fun to play against guys like that, and I have so much respect for Wemby.”
As dominant as Wembanyama has been to start the season, the Lakers managed to hold him to 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and one block on 5-for-14 shooting from the field. Putting him in early foul trouble, Los Angeles successfully limited the Spurs’ center throughout the game.
The Lakers’ performance
Luka Doncic finished with 35 points, nine rebounds, 13 assists, five steals, and two blocks in the win over the Spurs. With strong support from Deandre Ayton (22 points, 10 rebounds), Marcus Smart (17 points, five rebounds, five assists), and Rui Hachimura (15 points), the Lakers outlasted a resilient Spurs squad to secure another key win in the early stretch of the NBA season.
