The Los Angeles Chargers are ready to defy their history as they want to become a powerhouse in the NFL. That’s why they are trying to load the roster for head coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Justin Herbert. One of those weapons they brought to the team has been sidelined, but new updates might shed new light into his status.

That weapon is running back Najee Harris. The former Steeler came into the team to be a key part on Harbaugh’s offense. However, a fireworks accident on 4th of July injured the player’s eye. He’s been working out, but not with the first team.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz spoke with CBS and he was asked about Harris’ status. “Najee’s doing great, going through all the medical processes,” Hortiz said. “But he’s on track, and I think he should be able to go, hopefully in Week 1. That should be music to Harbaugh‘s ears.

Najee Harris has some clear strengths

Harris is entering his fifth season in the NFL. Not only has Najee being good, but there are things he excels at. Many people will criticize him for his career 3.9 yards per attempt, but will easily ignore the fact that the Steelers offensive line was very bad for the run game. Also, Harris has surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in every season he’s played. He is hard to bring down on first contact as he averages 2.1 yards after contact per attempt. Harris is also very strong and physical.

He is capable of hurdling opponents with ease, but can also stiff arm an opposing player six feet underground. The former Pro Bowler is really underrated. However, his biggest strength is one that a running back usually doesn’t have: availability. Running backs usually get hurt pretty quick and miss games. Having said that, Harris has started 68 out of 68 games during his NFL career. That is something Harbaugh should also love.

Harris should be part of a two-headed monster

Even if they have an incredible quarterback in Herbert, the Chargers will run the ball. A lot. Harbaugh’s playbook is keen on establishing the run to then unleash his quarterback. Hence, Harris is key, but that didn’t stop the Chargers from drafting another RB. With the 22nd pick in the first round, they picked North Carolina alumn Omarion Hampton.

Hampton is also a physical, strong runner that will likely be the main back of the team. After all, not only is he a first round pick, but he has actually trained fully with the team, as opposed to Harris.
