As a head coach, Aaron Glenn sees players from a unique perspective and notices things others might miss. He recently issued a warning about how successful Justin Fields could be with his new team, the New York Jets, in the upcoming season.
After spending time as Russell Wilson’s backup in Pittsburgh and starting his NFL career with the Bears, Fields now has a fresh opportunity to prove himself. Glenn believes the young quarterback has the tools to succeed, pointing to his “quiet confidence” and his ability to throw the deep ball “really, really well.”
He told NFL Network’s Judy Battista about Fields, saying, “He has a quiet confidence about himself.” Glenn continued, “He can really throw the deep ball really, really well. Obviously, his legs are something that’s dynamic not just in college but the NFL as well. I just think he’s ready to break out as a top-notch quarterback. So, he’s going to do everything he can to be one of the better ones, and we are going to coach our a—- off to make sure he does a good job out there.”
The Jets’ coaching staff is determined to help Fields reach that level, and Glenn made it clear they’ll “coach our a—- off” to put him in the best position to succeed. He emphasized that Fields’ dynamic rushing ability has translated from college to the NFL and that his potential is too great to overlook. With the right development, Glenn believes Fields is set to become a player opposing teams will need to prepare for.
Recent years haven’t been kind to Fields
Fields has struggled during his first four NFL seasons to establish himself as a top quarterback. Despite the confidence Glenn may express, the stats don’t lie. He has recorded just one winning season—a 4-2-0 stint during his brief time with the Steelers, which ended earlier than anyone expected.
In previous seasons, Fields finished three straight years with losing records (2-8-0, 3-12-0, and 5-8-0), significantly impacting his credibility as a quarterback. This was a sharp contrast to the immense talent he showcased at two college programs, Georgia and Ohio State.
The Jets need a strong quarterback
If Fields can finally unlock his full potential, he may help the Jets return to the postseason—a feat the team hasn’t accomplished since 2010, when they made it as far as the AFC Championship, only to lose to his former team, the Steelers.
