Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are ready to face any scenario in case Aaron Rodgers doesn’t sign with the team. According to a report by Gerry Dulac, despite having drafted Will Howard, they are going to sign a veteran quarterback.
“If Aaron Rodgers doesn’t decide to come, then they’re going to go with Mason Rudolph, but they still will sign a veteran quarterback. They believe in having two quarterbacks with starting NFL experience. Now, who that is, what those options are, well, the options are limited and that’s one of the problems here with waiting for Aaron Rodgers. Other veteran backups have signed with other teams, including the guy in Cleveland, Joe Flacco.”
The Steelers haven’t found the formula to become Super Bowl contenders again, and without a doubt, their biggest headache is at the quarterback position. That’s why Rodgers’ decision carries a lot of weight.
What happens if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t sign with Steelers?
Although Aaron Rodgers is the top choice to be the Steelers’ QB1, if the veteran decides not to sign with the team, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup plan is Mason Rudolph and sign another player at that position.
This is where, according to Dulac, Kirk Cousins still can’t be ruled out as a possibility, although that would require a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, where his salary could be the main obstacle.
“That was the one drawback to this whole process of waiting for Aaron Rodgers. You missed out on getting some other potential backups that aren’t going to cost you a whole lot. Not that they’re going to go out and pay a lot of money for Kirk Cousins, because they’re just not. That certainly is a possibility, but they continue to say that they are comfortable with Mason Rudolph as their starting quarterback.”
