The NFL has blessed fans with countless talented players throughout its history — many of whom have left a lasting legacy for future generations. Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady are two of the most iconic in recent memory, and perhaps the most defining figures of the modern era.

The experience of the former Patriots legend has provided Mahomes with wisdom and valuable advice as the multi-time Super Bowl champion continues to shape his own legacy with the Chiefs.

In a recent and in-depth conversation with Kay Adams, the Kansas City leader revealed some of the advice shared with him by the New England legend — who also had a final stint with the Buccaneers. The two share a strong relationship off the field, which has led to valuable mentorship moments between the quarterbacks.

“I’ve got to keep the secrets, you know?” Mahomes said on the Up & Adams Show. “But he always talks about being yourself. He thinks that, which I truly believe too, is that guys can spot when you’re not authentic, and you’re not putting in the work. That’s something that he did every single day.

That’s why guys respected him so much. And that’s all I’m going to do for the rest of my career, and I feel like I’ve done so far, is I’m always myself — no matter if you like me or don’t like me, you know I’m giving everything I can to win football games.”

The legacy of Brady and Mahomes in the NFL

Now several years out of the field, Tom Brady is undeniably regarded as one of the greatest of all time. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes — still in the prime of his career — may have much left to accomplish, but he has already established himself as a generational talent in the NFL.

“I think [legacy is] always in the back of your mind — even from the beginning of my career,” Mahomes said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about taking it a day at a time — a day, and a day, and a day, just continuing to do that. That’s something that I’ve been conscious of, of knowing how blessed I am to be in Kansas City, to have all these great players around me.”

In addition, one of the biggest stars currently on Andy Reid’s roster expressed his gratitude for the continued support and advice he receives from the former Patriots legend.

“And having Tom, a guy like that say that, just motivates me even more. I’ve actually talked to Tom a good amount this offseason. It’s cool that he wants to give me advice. He doesn’t have to be like that. He’s such a good dude. And I have so much respect for him, and I’ll take any advice he gives me.”

The last battle

Super Bowl LV, held on February 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, marked a historic occasion as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs with a final score of 31-9.

This was a particularly special event as the Bucs became the first team in history to play and win a final game in their home stadium. The game showcased a dominant defensive performance by Tampa Bay, which largely stifled the high-powered Chiefs offense led by Patrick Mahomes.

Brady, in his first season with Tampa Bay after a legendary career with the New England Patriots, delivered a masterful performance, securing his record-extending seventh Vince Lombardi trophy and his fifth SB MVP award.
