Drafting a quarterback as the number one overall pick is a stressful situation. First, it puts enormous pressure on both player and team to succeed. Second, it forces the franchise to surround the player with everything he needs for a chance to win NFL games. Well, the Tennessee Titans understand that and therefore hosted a veteran receiver that shared locker rooms with Jared Goff to see if he can be a new weapon for Cam Ward as the season begins.
Mike Garofolo of NFL Media reported that Tre’Quan Smith visited the team on Friday. Smith arrived to the NFL in 2018 as he was a third-round pick for the New Orleans Saints. He played there until 2022 and then moved to Denver, where he only played one game for the Broncos.
Last season, he was signed by the Lions, but went on injured reserve during preseason and didn’t play at all. Injuries have stalled Smith’s career but he is still only 29 years old. He can still produce if healthy.
Tre’Quan Smith was good on the Saints
Hailing from Central Florida, Smith had 131 receptions for 1,764 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was an absolute menace in the endzone. While his yards weren’t nothing to wow at, the Saints always used him when they were in the red zone.
Cam Ward has a veteran wideout corp that has more experience than speed at this point. However, that’s not a bad thing. Smith would be another piece that fits that mold. The Titans won’t pay big money, but will give Ward veterans that know how to produce in the NFL. If Smith ends up signing, he will join Calvin Ridley, Tyler Lockett, and Van Jefferson.
It’s ‘prove it time’ for the Titans head coach
Brian Callahan arrived in Tennessee after a stint as the offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals. There, he had Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and many more young players. Now, he is working with the opposite, veteran players and a rookie quarterback.
However, after a very bad offensive season last year, Callahan’s ability to draw a productive offense is in question. In Cincy, the talent was so magnificent that they produced no matter what. Now that he is not working with that, he needs to prove himself or the Titans might look for head coach candidates in the near future.
