Bryce Harper hasn’t played since May 27, when he was hit by a pitch on his right elbow — an injury that’s kept him out of action for the Phillies. While he’s been spotted doing light work on the field, his latest comments about the elbow are far from encouraging.
“Still super sore,” Harper said of his right elbow. He also admitted he’s unsure when he’ll be able to return. “Obviously getting treatment and things like that. Not sure when I’m gonna play again.”
Harper hasn’t picked up a bat yet to test the elbow, and while he’s hoping to avoid the injured list, there’s no certainty. “Uhh… I hope not,” Harper said when asked if the IL was a possibility. “At this point, it’s gonna be three games today. So again, we’re super day-by-day, but I don’t think so.”
Hot streak cut short
The injury came just as Harper was hitting his stride. In the 10 days before getting hit, he posted a .390 average with 16 hits, 6 runs, 1 home run, and 10 RBIs in 41 at-bats — striking out only 3 times. It was one of his most productive stretches of the MLB season.
Harper weighs in on getting pitched inside
Tim Kelly of On Pattison asked Harper if he’s frustrated with how often he gets pitched up and in — and the Phillies’ No. 3 hitter didn’t hold back.
“Yeah, I mean, I think that’s where teams kind of go against me,” Harper said. “It’s a bummer, just because guys throw so hard now. But, I mean, that’s where guys go. Sinkers in, heaters up and in.”
“I understand throwing inside. I totally get that. I’m all for it in baseball and getting guys off pitches away,” he added. “But just control — guys throw a little too hard now to do that up and in, things like that.”
