Preston Mattingly reveals where Otto Kemp might thrive with Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies may look to Otto Kemp to fill a specific position in the future — one that could be a win for both the team and the young player, based on what Preston Mattingly recently revealed.

Preston Mattingly knows the Philadelphia Phillies have positional needs to address across the field, and that’s where Otto Kemp could play a role in the team’s future — particularly in the infield, as Mattingly recently pointed out.

In a recent interview with On Pattison, Mattingly spoke highly of Kemp and how his development under the Phillies’ system has paid off. He noted that Kemp’s most natural fit appears to be at the hot corner.

“I think he has the ability to play all over,” Mattingly said about Kemp’s versatility. “I think third base is his best spot. He’s played a little bit of outfield in the Fall League and here early in Lehigh Valley’s season. He’s played some second base and first base. Those are new to him, as is the outfield. But I think third base is his most natural spot.”

Kemp may be nearing a Major League call-up

Mattingly’s remarks suggest Kemp could be on the verge of a major league call-up to debut with the Phillies soon. The young infielder recently made noise with another home run in Triple-A.

“He has the ability to take in information and apply it in the game. [He’s] an extremely strong kid … obviously strong wrists, strong forearms. He’s gotten better and better defensively. He’s one of the better baserunners in our organization. I just think he’s a really good baseball player,” Mattingly said to On Pattison.

Rob Thomson also sees Kemp fitting in the infield

A few days earlier, Phillies manager Rob Thomson had also praised Kemp for his strong performance in Triple-A this season, highlighting his on-base skills, power, and dependable defense. Thomson echoed that Kemp could contribute both in the infield and outfield.

“Really, anywhere,” Thomson said. Second base, third base, corner outfield, first base. He’s pretty solid everywhere, really.” He added, “I think he’s more suited to play the infield, but I wouldn’t be hesitant to move him to the outfield either.”
