Taijuan Walker has been solid for the Philadelphia Phillies so far in 2025, posting a 2.54 ERA across six starts. But with Ranger Suárez set to return to the rotation, Walker is aware that his role could soon change.
In his latest comments, Walker revealed he hasn’t yet spoken with Phillies decision-makers about his future in the rotation. Still, he made it clear that Suárez’s return is a positive development for the team, recognizing the impact the Venezuelan pitcher can make.
“I’ve not talked to them yet. I’ll see what they say,” Walker said when asked about his role after Suárez’s return. “Ranger coming back is such a bonus for us. He’s a good pitcher. I know we missed him in our rotation, so we’ll see what happens…”
Why didn’t Ranger Suárez start the 2025 season?
Suárez missed the start of the MLB year while recovering from a back injury. His return was expected, especially after the Phillies signed him to an $8.8 million deal for one more season back in January. Weeks ago, the team indicated he’d be back by late April, and before being activated, he had already thrown 78 pitches in a rehab outing.

Suárez was part of the Phillies rotation in 2024 alongside Walker. That season, the Venezuelan lefty appeared in 27 games and recorded a 3.46 ERA. Walker, meanwhile, made 15 starts across 19 total appearances.

Phillies need Suárez back on the mound
It’s no secret the Phillies need more depth in their rotation. Jesús Luzardo has been a standout, but the team can’t rely solely on him. If Suárez can stay healthy and keep his ERA under 4.00 — as he has in most seasons — he could be a key factor in helping Philadelphia make a deep postseason run.
