The upcoming NBA season is already generating plenty of anticipation, especially for some of the league’s most high-profile franchises. Few teams are under the microscope more than the Los Angeles Lakers, and much of that attention now shifts to Luka Doncic. After his move to L.A., the Slovenian star has stunned fans and analysts alike with a dramatic physical transformation. Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green took notice — and didn’t hold back in praising him.
According to Green, the Lakers’ new star looks as locked in as ever. The Warriors forward believes the move may have reignited Doncic’s competitive edge, potentially setting the stage for the best NBA season of his career.
“Luka is looking like rookie Luka all over again,” Green wrote in an Instagram post. “The trade has created that hunger again, it seems! Also, the perfect year to go win his first MVP award.”
Green is no stranger to championship-caliber talent. While he isn’t expected to be in the MVP conversation himself, his resume speaks volumes: four NBA titles, four All-Star appearances, and a Defensive Player of the Year award. Though he averages modest numbers at 8.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game on 42.4% shooting, his leadership and defensive prowess have long been essential to the Warriors’ success.
Doncic, meanwhile, is leaving nothing to chance. In his first offseason in Los Angeles, the 25-year-old guard has doubled down on his physical conditioning. He’s reportedly following a strict diet and has spent the entire summer focused on endurance, fitness, and cutting weight to get into peak shape. For the first time in his career, he’s also taken a complete break from soccer, a sport he has often played during the offseason.

Green’s MVP prediction is bold, but far from outrageous. Despite career averages of 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 7.7 assists on 45% shooting, Doncic has never won the award. He came closest during the 2023–24 campaign, finishing third in MVP voting behind Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
This season, Doncic will benefit from new surroundings and a refreshed roster. He’ll be joined by a legitimate starting center in Deandre Ayton, along with key contributors like LeBron James, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura. Together, they’ll be tasked with filling the void left by Anthony Davis and addressing the Lakers’ defensive and rebounding weaknesses in the paint.
