The San Francisco 49ers experienced an unexpected loss against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, holding a 5-2 record after an impressive 5-0 start to the season. However, the most significant development from the game emerged during coach Kyle Shanahan‘s press conference on Wednesday.

Shanahan disclosed a critical addition to the injury report, which could impact their match against the Cincinnati Bengals as he told media that Brock Purdy had entered the concussion protocol. Despite playing the entire game against the Vikings, the quarterback started experiencing symptoms during the return flight home.

Shanahan then stated it’s uncertain when Purdy sustained the injury, as there were no apparent signs during his communication with the player: “He started getting symptoms on the plane. We finally found that out when we landed. We were all pretty asleep, but then he got all checked up yesterday and now he’s in the protocol.”

Sam Darnold Is Set to Play if Purdy Can’t

If Purdy is unable to play, Sam Darnold would be the next quarterback in line. The backup has begun preparations during the team’s practice for his first appearance starting with the 49ers while his teammate recovers.

The concussion diagnosis has cast doubt on Purdy’s availability for the game against the Bengals. Shanahan mentioned that, according to the rules of the concussion protocol, it is not a secure possibility that Purdy clears it in time to participate in the matchup.

In the absence of Purdy, the 49ers must turn to Darnold, who was signed as a free agent in March and earned the backup quarterback position over Trey Lance. Albeit Darnold has seen limited action this season, Shanahan expressed his confidence in Darnold’s readiness to step in if needed.

Shanahan showed support to his player by affirming: “I have as much confidence in Sam as I could have with someone that I haven’t gotten into a real NFL game with. He was great in the offseason. He’s been great here in these seven weeks so far and he’s always ready to go.”
