The New England Patriots faced a lot of uncertainties entering this NFL season. Tom Brady left the team to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and they took a gamble on Cam Newton, who was coming off a major injury, to become their new starting quarterback.

Well, so far, so good for Bill Belichick’s team. They dominated the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 and were one yard away from upsetting the Seattle Seahawks on the road on a Sunday Night Football instant classic.

Moreover, Cam Newton has looked like he did in his MVP season, making plays with his legs, being aggressive downfield, and just making something happen every time he’s out in the open, which is obviously the biggest story of the season thus far.

ESPN’s Ryan Clark Says The Patriots Are Better Now

That’s why former NFL defensive back turned ESPN analyst Ryan Clark went as far as to say that the New England Patriots are better off with Cam Newton than they were with their lifelong quarterback Tom Brady.

“This collection of players — N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, and Julian Edelman— is better with Cam Newton at quarterback, period. They are. He does more with this team than Tom Brady ever could. That’s not a knock on their careers. That is not in any way to negate Tom Brady’s greatness. They needed Cam Newton. This was a match made in heaven, the same way Cam Newton said it was. It was beautiful to watch last night,” Clark said.

Jeff Saturday Chimes In, Says The Patriots Are ‘Absolutely’ Better With Cam Newton

Clark isn’t the only retiredplayer currently on ESPN’s payroll to state that the Patriots are better off with Cam Newton than with Tom Brady, as former Colt and Packer Jeff Saturday had quite a similar take:

They’re absolutely better. Here’s why: ‘Cause their receivers are spot receivers. What does that mean? Wherever they catch it, spot the ball right there ’cause they ain’t doing anything explosive after the catch, man. So you need to play 11-on-11 football. (…) Tom Brady can’t make anything happen with his legs so, obviously, right now, with the way Cam Newton has played, this is a definitely better fit for the Patriots and this offense as opposed to last year with Tom Brady,” Saturday said.

Obviously, neither of those guys are taking shots at Brady and talk merely about a fit standpoint. They do have a valid point but let’s not blow things out of proportion. It’s only been two weeks, Brady was there for two decades.
