The figure of head coach Kevin Stefanski looms over one of the most intense quarterback battles in the league, the one unfolding within the Cleveland Browns. Shedeur Sanders, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Kenny Pickett are the main contenders vying for the key position in the franchise’s offense.

Following a chaotic 2024 season that ended with a 3-14 record for the Browns, this preseason brings multiple options but few certainties for the coach in a role that remains unclaimed. For now, Stefanski has his eyes on Sanders, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 Draft, who is ready to make waves in the big leagues.

All are trying to earn their spot in a scenario full of adjustments and injuries, most notably that of Deshaun Watson, who will be out for an extended period. Meanwhile, the signing of veteran Tyler Huntley as the team’s sixth quarterback has intensified the competition even further. In a context of open competition for the starting role, Stefanski made a significant admission.

Who will be the Browns’ starting quarterback?

Stefanski confirmed to the media that only Shedeur Sanders and Tyler Huntley will take snaps during the first preseason game. Flacco, Pickett, and Gabriel won’t see action this weekend, giving the younger players a key opportunity to showcase their abilities.

Stefanksi’s expectations for Sanders

“My expectations for Shedeur are no different than the rest of the guys, honestly. But expect him to go operate. When you get in these preseason games, you try to keep it very simple so guys can play fast. All concepts that our players know and can kind of not think too much, and just play ball,” Stefanski said.
