Ben Roethlisberger spoke about the quarterback competition brewing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in preseason. Aaron Rodgers is the starter, Mason Rudolph would be the backup, but the question remains what will happen with Will Howard and Skylar Thompson.

Big Ben made a bold prediction about Thompson’s future in his podcast Footbahlin. “I doubt the Steelers are going to keep four quarterbacks. Let’s be honest. I think he’s playing himself into a really legit chance for a backup job somewhere on a team. That’s what you want. This is my chance to get a job somewhere. I want to put my resume on tape. That’s what he did. I thought he played really well.”

Skylar put up an impressive stat line in the first preseason game against the Jaguars: 20 of 28 completions, 233 yards, and three touchdowns. It’s important to remember that, in the 2022 season, Thompson was the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins in the playoffs when Tua Tagovailoa was still in the concussion protocol, nearly pulling off an upset against Josh Allen and the Bills on the road.

Who are the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks currently?

Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard, and Skylar Thompson are the quarterbacks for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but as Ben Roethlisberger said, it seems unlikely that Mike Tomlin will keep all four on the roster.

Rodgers and Rudolph have their spots secured unless an injury occurs, so the final roster place will come down to a battle between Will Howard and Skylar Thompson.

Howard suffered a finger injury that has kept him out of preseason, opening the door for Thompson to shine. However, when it comes to the No. 3 spot, the Steelers would likely give preference to the rookie, which could leave Skylar off the roster. At that point, another team might sign him after his strong performance in Jacksonville.
