It’s a time of great movement in the NFL as free agency has brought a slew of updates in recent hours. DeMeco Ryans is already aware that he won’t be able to count on a key teammate of CJ Stroud with the Houston Texans, as the player in question has left to join the Washington Commanders to play alongside Jayden Daniels.
Five-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil has finally agreed to join the Commanders, and will play the upcoming NFL season in the NFC East. This is definitely a big loss for the Texans heading into the future.
The news was reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, who, through his X (formerly Twitter) account, detailed part of the deal between both franchises.
“Blockbuster trade: The #Texans are finalizing a trade of five-time Pro Bowl LT Laremy Tunsil to the #Commanders, sources say. A huge addition for Washington, as Houston gets a draft pick haul,” Rapoport state via @RapSheet.

Laremy Tunsil #78 of the Houston Texans is introduced prior to a game against the Los Angeles Chargers during the AFC Wild Card Playoffs at NRG Stadium on January 11, 2025 in Houston, Texas.
The insider also added: “The full terms: — A 2nd rounder and a fourth rounder next year to the #Texans, plus a third rounder this year. — Houston sends back a fourth rounder and Laremy Tunsil.”
Another significant loss for the Texans
Unfortunately for the Texans, Tunsil’s departure to the Commanders is not the only confirmed loss this offseason. According to reports, another defensive player is changing teams, though he remains in the AFC South.
According to insider Maurice Jones-Drew, safety Eric Murray has agreed to leave Houston and will be a new teammate of Trevor Lawrence with the Jaguars. Definitely a great addition for Liam Coen’s team.
The deal was signed for three years, worth $22.5 million. The veteran was a consistent piece in Houston’s secondary. During his time with the Texans, he made 43 starts, 262 combined tackles, 4 TFLs, and 16 passes defended.
A running back stays in Houston
Not all is lost in DeMeco Ryans’ roster, as the Texans could re-sign a key CJ Stroud’s teammate for the 2025 season, and their offense is expected to be very important once again.
Running back Dare Ogunbowale has finally agreed to continue with the franchise for one more year, in exchange for $2 million. Although he wasn’t one of the primary options for the QB, the RB proved to be another valuable alternative for Houston’s offense.
