Despite speculation, Mike Tomlin and the Steelers were never truly considering Russell Wilson over Aaron Rodgers. From the start, their priority was clear to chase a Super Bowl.

Despite all the rumors, Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers were never interested in bringing Russell Wilson back. According to a report by Mike Florio, Aaron Rodgers was always the priority.

“By the time the season was over, there was a sense from some in the building that Wilson is ‘physically done.’ And the team’s ensuing actions backed up those words, completely. Remember when the official word was that the team’s preference was to re-sign Wilson OR Justin Fields? Once Fields agreed to sign with the Jets, Wilson’s name NEVER came up.”

The Steelers’ short-term bet to win the Super Bowl is Rodgers, and looking toward the future, multiple reports have indicated that the intention is to draft a possible franchise quarterback in 2025 or 2026.

Did the Steelers sign Aaron Rodgers?

No. The Steelers haven’t signed Aaron Rodgers, but as the days go by, it becomes clearer that Russell Wilson was never an option for them. In reality, their first attempt was with Justin Fields, although the Jets made a better offer, and the player chose themas he might not have forgotten how Tomlin benched him even after a 4-2 record.

Eventually, when Wilson realized that options were running out, the veteran had visits to New York and Cleveland. Finally, the player signed with the Giants, clearly knowing that the Steelers weren’t considering him, as Florio mentions.

“But the Steelers never really tried to re-sign Wilson. By all appearances, they never really wanted him back. Which makes the Giants’ interest even more surprising. Given the close ties between the two franchises, was there not a candid conversation about the Steelers’ experience with Wilson in 2025? If there was, and if the Steelers shared information consistent with their ultimate lack of interest in bringing him back, what made things different for the Giants?”
