Mike Tomlin spoke for the first time about the controversial trade that sent George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Dallas Cowboys. The head coach did not want to go into much detail on the matter, stating that it is already a closed chapter.
“You know, I’m not going to add any color to it other than what Omar (Khan) told you guys. We thought it was best and timely for all parties involved. Really, I’m just focused on the opportunity that is this weekend for the rookies.”
The Steelers could have looked like Super Bowl contenders if they had kept Pickens alongside DK Metcalf, as well as the potential arrival of Aaron Rodgers. Now, according to many experts, they have taken a big step back from that goal.
Why did Steelers trade George Pickens?
Mike Tomlin explained that letting go of George Pickens was the best outcome for both parties. In fact, the head coach’s statement was very similar to the one given earlier by the team’s general manager, Omar Khan.
“This trade made sense for everyone. We just kind of talked about it. Lots of serious and honest conversations. We just felt that a fresh start for both sides was the right thing. I wouldn’t use the word disappointment. We had three years with George and, you know, we had some exciting times, but, it was just time for the fresh start for both sides. We wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t feel good about this receiver situation. About our depth here. We have a good group. We feel comfortable.”
