NFL News: Mike Tomlin’s Steelers were reportedly interested in new Cowboys QB amid Aaron Rodgers’ delay

The Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly showed interest in a new Dallas Cowboys quarterback as a backup plan amid Aaron Rodgers’ delay in responding to whether he will join Mike Tomlin’s team for the 2025 NFL season.

Aaron Rodgers still hasn’t responded to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offer to become the starting quarterback under head coach Mike Tomlin for the 2025 NFL season. In a desperate attempt to avoid being left empty-handed in case of a negative answer from A-Rod, the franchise had shown interest in a new QB recently acquired by the Dallas Cowboys.

Rodgers has had the offer on the table for several days, but the speculation hasn’t stopped. In Pittsburgh, there’s still confidence in waiting for him, but doubts are beginning to grow due to the long delay. A-Rod’s silence has reached a point where the team has started to shift its focus toward other potential additions.

Last week, rumors surfaced about the Steelers’ possible interest in Atlanta Falcons’ Kirk Cousins, and now it has been revealed that the black and gold franchise has also eyed a new Cowboys player. As the wait for Rodgers continues, Tomlin knows that every minute without an update is time wasted, and he wants to bolster a quarterback room that was left nearly empty after the departures of Justin Fields and Russell Wilson.

Steelers had interest in new Cowboys quarterback

According to a report by FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz, the Steelers were among the teams interested in acquiring quarterback Joe Milton III, who joined the Cowboys this offseason after being traded from the New England Patriots. Apparently, Pittsburgh wasn’t the only organization keeping an eye on him.

Other teams that reportedly showed interest in Milton included the Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. However, the Patriots ultimately traded the 25-year-old quarterback and a seventh-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round pick, honoring the player’s preference to join Dallas.

What will Aaron Rodgers decide?

Rodgers’ future in the NFL remains a mystery. The former Super Bowl champion with the Green Bay Packers doesn’t have many options outside of the Steelers, although he’s still on the radar of the Minnesota Vikings, who are hoping for a strong return from rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy. Meanwhile, the silence surrounding A-Rod is starting to be seen as a bad sign for Mike Tomlin, and the Steelers are beginning to lose patience.
