Russell Wilson has secured a new home for the 2025 NFL season. The Super Bowl champion edged out Aaron Rodgers in the race to land with a new team, ‘stealing’ his potential destination by signing with an unexpected NFC club.

Last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers brought in Russell Wilson to be their starting quarterback. While his performance was decent, it didn’t meet Mike Tomlin’s expectations, leading the team to opt against offering him an extension for the upcoming season.

In free agency, Wilson was competing with Aaron Rodgers as the top veteran quarterbacks available. However, it was ‘DangeRuss’ who secured a landing spot first, joining a team that had also been considering signing Rodgers this offseason.

The New York Giants have signed Russell Wilson to a 1-year, $21 million deal, per ESPN. The club had recently signed Jameis Winston, making it surprising that they opted to add another veteran quarterback this offseason.

According to NFL Media, the 10-time Pro Bowler had options with the Giants, Browns, and even the Steelers. However, after Aaron Rodgers visited Pittsburgh last week, Wilson decided to leave the AFC North behind and head to New York.

While the Giants also had their eyes on Aaron Rodgers, head coach Brian Daboll ultimately preferred Russell Wilson. The veteran quarterback is already familiar with success at MetLife Stadium, having won Super Bowl XLVIII there when the Seahawks defeated the Broncos.

The news surprised many, as Winston’s recent arrival was seen as a clear indication that the team had already secured its veteran QB. However, it now appears that Wilson will be the starter while Jameis sits behind him, though questions remain about the Giants’ plans for the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Giants currently hold the 3rd overall selection. The signings of Wilson and Winston suggest that the club might not be fully committed to drafting a quarterback in the first round, potentially waiting until 2026 to acquire a new prospect.

It appears that New York could now go in a different direction and select either Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter at No. 3 overall. With the Titans and Browns expected to draft quarterbacks, the Giants have seemingly anticipated this scenario by securing Russell Wilson.
