Even though the 2023 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> season is not over yet, it’s safe to say the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-england-patriots">New England Patriots</a>‘ campaign has been, to put it lightly, completely disappointing. In fact, that explains why <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bill-belichick">Bill Belichick</a> is reportedly on the hot seat.



The team has seriously struggled at quarterback, with neither <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mac-jones">Mac Jones</a> nor <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bailey-zappe">Bailey Zappe</a> finding a way to get things going this year. To make things worse, the Patriots let Malik Cunningham go despite his promising performances in the preseason.



The rookie quarterback, who can also perform at wide receiver, was signed off the Patriots’ practice squad by the Baltimore Ravens, something that didn’t sit well with some people in Foxborough. Offensive tackle Trent Brown, for instance, has once again shown his frustration with the lack of opportunities given to Cunningham. On top of that, he said everyone on the locker room feels that way.



<h2>Trent Brown thinks Cunningham deserved more chances</h2>



“Absolutely,” Brown said when asked by AtoZ Sports’ Sophie Weller if he thought Cunningham deserved a chance this season. “Everybody on the team did. Everybody.”

Even though Cunningham showed signs of his talent before Week 1, he got only six snaps during the regular season. His lack of playing time took many by surprise, considering how poorly the team was doing at the position while he did well in the preseason games. Brown even took a subtle jab at Jones and Zappe, claiming none of their drives was as good as one of Cunningham in preseason.

“I mean, probably the most exciting drive we had in that stadium was against Houston in preseason games this season,” Brown said. “Like, my guy couldn’t even get a red jersey.”



Brown had already expressed his unhappiness with the way things went with Cunningham as soon as he got signed by the Ravens. “Go flourish where your talent is respected lil bradda,” he wrote on an Instagram story.



<h2>Patriots coaches reportedly wanted to play Cunningham after five weeks</h2>



While Brown made it clear how much he wanted to see Cunningham under center, it looks like some members of the Patriots’ coaching staff considered to give him more snaps after the brutal 0-34 loss to the Saints in Week 5.



“I will tell you this: I heard from coaches after the Saints game. So, two blowouts in a row, bad quarterback play. And I had coaches say to me, ‘We might as well try Malik at this point. What do we have to lose?’ And so, that may have been reflective of a greater portion of the locker room than maybe I was willing to give credit to at the time,” said Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston, via NESN.

Either way, the Patriots continued to start Jones for a few weeks before Belichick ultimately benched him for Zappe. Cunningham now is developing behind Lamar Jackson, which Trent Brown sees as a great opportunity for his former teammate.



“It’s funny because I told him months ago if they ever called, if anybody, that’s the team where he should go,” Brown said about Baltimore. “… And that’s really good for him to actually get a real chance to play his real position.”

Even though he didn’t have much room on the roster, Cunningham showed no hard feelings against his former team. On the contrary, the rookie QB was grateful to Belichick and Robert Kraft for trusting in him despite going undrafted this year.



“I wanted to thank Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick for giving me (an) opportunity to play with the Patriots. I learned a lot from them,” Cunningham said in a statement, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. “I wanted to be a coach one day, so I would take notes from Coach Belichick because he’s one of the greatest of all time. I had great teammates in New England and built relationships that will last a lifetime. But I just feel like this is a good opportunity for me, and I’m excited to be a Baltimore Raven.”

According to Scott Zolak, who spent nine seasons in Foxborough before becoming a broadcaster, the six-time <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> champion will end up with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/dallas-cowboys">Dallas Cowboys</a>.



“I’m just saying, well, if everybody assumes it. Everybody I talk to assumes it,” Zolak said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s ‘Zolak &amp; Bertrand,’ via NESN. “They will lose a game that counts, a divisional game, or something like that because of coaching.”



The Cowboys are in their fourth year under Mike McCarthy, and while his job looks safe for now, everything could change if Dallas suffer another early playoff elimination. The team was doing just fine until last week, when it suffered a terrible loss at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.



“To me, it’s starting to shape up Dallas. You see the Dallas swoon starting to begin,” Zolak said. “They got their (expletive) kicked by Buffalo two days ago. Buffalo did what they wanted with them. You line it up and you look at them, they got a big offensive line, good running back, marquee quarterback. You got good receivers. You got good cover guys. You got Lawrence Taylor Jr. in No. 11 (Micah Parsons). You got a big defensive line and good safeties.“

“I don’t know nothing. Nothing would really shock me. If he comes back, that wouldn’t shock me,” Zolak added. “That would be you’re getting a clearance in your scouting department, in your front office. That’s getting cleaned out, if he comes back there’s reason he’s back.”



What seems to be on the cards is the end of Belichick’s role as general manager, though it remains to be seen whether he’ll accept to continue working as a head coach with another guy in the front office.

As for the Cowboys, while a successful coach like Belichick could be interesting for a franchise craving for a long-awaited Super Bowl, team owner Jerry Jones suggested they’re fine with McCarthy.

I think he’s done an outstanding job,” Jones said when asked about a contract extension for McCarthy on 105.3 The FAN, via Michael Gehlken. “I think the fact that he’s your offensive coordinator as well as your head coach puts him in higher stead than when he was the walk-around coach. All of those things are positive.

With that in mind, lifelong NFL insider Peter King took some time to explain just why it would make the most sense for the legendary coach to take his talents to SoFi Stadium.

<h2>Peter King Says Belichick Needs To Choose The Chargers</h2>



“If Bill Belichick wants to break Don Shula’s record, and I really think that he does, he’s gonna have to do it in, pick a town,” King said on the God Bless Football Podcast. “If I were him, I’d pick the Chargers because you got a quarterback.”



Simply put, the Chargers would give Belichick the strongest chance to get the 15 wins he needs to pass Don Shula in the all-time wins list. He’s not getting any younger, and there might not be a lot of time to build a team from scratch:



“If you look at what the Chargers have that Bill Belichick would want, this is a guy who’s gonna be 72 years old next opening day,” King said. “He’s got to think mentally, ‘Look, I don’t know how much longer I have.’ If you leave New England, you need 15 wins, you’ve got to think that he could do enough with some good pieces on defense and with Justin Herbert to win 15 games in two years.”

Apparently, Robert Kraft made up his mind after the team’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany.



The season has been a disaster in Foxboro. People are blaming Belichick for ‘breaking’<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mac-jones" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Mac Jones,</a> and the team’s unimpressive roster, lack of player development, and questionable scouting decisions also point at him.



Then again, as much as Belichick is to blame for the state of the team, no one can take anything away from him and everything he’s accomplished in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">National Football League.</a>



That’s why it’s just a matter of time before a team reaches out to the Patriots to inquire about his availability, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him draw plenty of interest as a free agent if the Patriots were to fire him. But which teams make the most sense? Let’s break it down.

<h2>3 Potential Landing Spots For Belichick</h2>



<h2>3. Washington Commanders</h2>



The Washington Commanders have a new owner. They also have a lot of cap space and draft capital to revamp their team and start competing with other NFC powerhouses once and for all. They could look to make a big splash in the offseason, and that could include a new coach.



Ron Rivera has failed to establish his defensive expertise in Maryland. And while Eric Bieniemy should be the next in line, perhaps he would be willing to cooperate and work under another future Hall of Famer at coach.



The only issue with this is that new owner Josh Harris wants to have a ‘hands-on’ approach to his team’s decision-making. Belichick is a lone wolf who doesn’t like to ask for permission or consult his decisions with anybody, and he might not be given that much power here.



<h2>2. New Orleans Saints</h2>



Likewise, the New Orleans Saints might not want to give Bill Belichick GM and HC responsibilities. Then again, they found their most success with a guy who used a similar approach: Sean Payton.

Like Payton, Belichick always builds his team defense-first and is a hard-nosed, old-school, tough-love kind of guy. That didn’t grant him a lot of success in the final stage of his career, but the Saints could be tempted to give him a shot to try and revive their mystique.



The Saints play in the weakest division in football, and Belichick is also familiar with that situation after dominating the ever-struggling AFC East for two decades before it became good. 



<h2>1. Los Angeles Chargers</h2>



The Los Angeles Chargers have been deemed a potential destination for Belichick for quite a while now. And now that they’ve fired both GM Tom Telesco and HC Brandon Staley, it only makes more sense.



The Chargers have elite players on both sides of the field, but they’ve failed to get over the hump for quite a while now. Perhaps all they need is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said before the start of the season that he was going to make changes if things didn’t improve this year. Fast forward to today, and with the Pats sitting on a 3-10 record, it goes without saying that things didn’t improve at all.



Now, a report by Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/patriots-decided-to-move-on-from-bill-belichick-long-ago-20231213-BUS-91647.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reveals </a>that Kraft has already decided to cut ties with Belichick, and it doesn’t seem like there’s anything he can do to change his mind at this point.



“When they came out of [the 10-6 loss to the Colts on Nov. 12 in] Germany, conversations I had that week made it very clear that a decision was made,”&nbsp;said Curran.&nbsp;“They were going to play out the string, and at the end of the year, there would be a parting of the ways for a variety of reasons.”

<h2>Potential Replacements For Belichick</h2>



With that in mind, and judging by the current status of the team, we’ll take a look at the only three candidates who could realistically bite the bullet and look to take this team back to its glory days.



<h2>3. Jim Harbaugh</h2>



This one could be a bit of a long shot, as Jim Harbaugh will draw interest from several teams, and most franchises will be in a much better position to compete than the Patriots, at least with this roster.



Harbaugh has flirted with going back to the NFL for quite a while now but to no avail. Now, following several scandals at Ann Arbor, it seems like the table is set for that to happen. Again, it might not be the best position, but it’ll sure help him reaffirm his status and make a statement as a winning coach.



<h2>2. Jerod Mayo</h2>



On the second spot, we find former LB Jerod Mayo. Mayo has been labeled as Belichick’s heir-apparent for quite a while now, and he even turned down several interviews for head coaching jobs last season.

He recently affirmed his desire to become a Head Coach and his love for the Patriots organization, and he would be a bit of a natural transition after serving as Belichick’s assistant coach for years. Then again, why would Kraft want anything to do with this current regime?



<h2>1. Josh McDaniels</h2>



Josh McDaniels’ tenure with the Las Vegas Raiders was a blatant failure. He tried to replicate Belichick’s tough-love approach, but the players didn’t seem to respect him enough for that to work. He hadn’t earned those stripes.



But McDaniels is a bit of a legend in Foxboro. The players know him, love him, and respect him, and the same goes for everybody else in the organization. Also, if Robert Kraft still believes in Mac Jones, he could reunite him with the only guy who made him look like an NFL-caliber quarterback.

Bill Belichick not even flinched and followed the same path he used in the other questions. “Getting ready for Kansas City.” That was it. No more words and no other message regarding the subject.

As you may know by now, a lot has happened since, and the Patriots have been a borderline playoff team since Brady left. They hit a new low this season, winning just three out of 13 games thus far and looking out of sorts more often than not.



That has led to plenty of speculation regarding Bill Belichick’s future with the team, not to mention some people have added fuel to the fire of the ‘greatest coach of all time’ debate.



Notably, a report by NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran states that Belichick’s time in Foxboro is coming to an end. Apparently, Robert Kraft made the decision following their loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Germany.

“When they came out of [the 10-6 loss to the Colts on Nov. 12 in] Germany, conversations I had that week made it very clear that a decision was made,” said Curran. “They were going to play out the string, and at the end of the year, there would be a parting of the ways for a variety of reasons.”



The Patriots failed to bounce back from that loss, and not even taking down the Pittsburgh Steelers in primetime wasn’t enough for Kraft to change his mind about that. 



“It had gone too far. The Germany game. The Commanders game. The Saints game. All huge, marquee games. And then there was the Chargers game after that,” Curran added. “Just because they won last week in Pittsburgh in primetime, I don’t think it quells anything.”



<h2>Jerod Mayo Admits Desire To Coach Patriots</h2>



So, who’s going to take over? All signs point to formre linebacker and assistant coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo turned down several head coaching interviews in the offseason, and the team reportedly signed him to a contract extension that would keep him there for a while. However, when asked about it, he gave a Belichick-ish answer:

Even so, Mayo wound up admitting that he, indeed, wants to be a head coach and talked about how honored he’d feel if he were to get that opportunity with the Patriots:



“Hopefully, as you guys all know, one day I want to be a head coach,” Mayo admitted. “Where that is, I don’t know. But at the same time, I would say I have a lot of love for New England. I have a lot of love for the fans; the people around the building. And you know, my family; they love it here as well. So that would be great if I could stay here and continue to progress throughout my career, but we’ll see.”

Belichick just signed a contract extension, so any team that wants him would most likely have to trade for him. That’s assuming he’s not looking forward to retirement or at least getting a break from coaching.

Needless to say, the chances are very slim, but they still exist. CBS Sports has found a way that could give the Patriots access to the postseason, though it will practically require a miracle.

First of all, the hardest part is that New England would have to win all its remaining games. If we look at how much the Patriots struggled this year, it’s hard to imagine them getting so many victories in a row.

I’ve always wanted to be a quarterback in the NFL, and specifically for the Patriots,” said on the ‘Jones and Mego’ show of WEEI on Monday, via NESN. “Like I said, I’ve got a lot of room to grow and everything, and I’m going to just continue to work hard and do all the things I can to put myself in a position to have success.”



For the fourth time this season, Jones was benched for Bailey Zappe at halftime of the Patriots’ 7-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. His performances have left much to be desired so far, but Jones still believes he can turn things around.

<h2>Mac Jones explains how hard it is to play quarterback</h2>



Jones made quite an impression in 2021, shortly after being selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. The Patriots came from a disappointing campaign in their first year without Tom Brady, so the way Jones settled in the NFL gave them reasons to believe.



In his rookie year, Jones threw for 3,801 yards, with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a 56.9 QBR. His stats declined in 2022, with 2,997 yards, 14 TDs and 11 INTs for a 38.4 QBR. This year, his numbers are even worse (2,120 yards, 10 TDs, 12 INTs, 36.5 QBR). In the same interview, Jones pointed out how hard it is to be a quarterback in the NFL.



“Playing quarterback in the NFL is the toughest job in sports,” Jones said. “It’s hard to understand if you haven’t been back there. Everyone would say that that’s played. It’s a really difficult position. That’s why it’s the best position. I understand the frustration. At the end of the day, this is my dream to play quarterback. I want to play better.”

This was the fourth time Jones was benched this season. <h2>Bailey Zappe hopes to start against the Chargers</h2>



“Yeah, that’d be great,” Zappe said when asked if he would like to have more starter reps this week. “But that’s Coach Belichick’s decision. Whatever he decides, if he wants to do — whatever. I’ll do whatever he says.”



Despite the quarterback change, the Patriots didn’t show much of an improvement in the second half. They did manage to score a touchdown thanks to running back Rhamondre Stevenson, but Zappe still left much to be desired.

His nine of 14 completions went to targets no longer than five yards, totaling -4 air yards. Zappe managed to put the Patriots in a position to attempt a field goal to force overtime, but he had previously thrown a costly interception that set up the Giants’ field goal. Even so, Belichick refused to say who will start next week.



“That’s Coach Belichick’s decision,” the second-year quarterback insisted when asked if he would like to get the chance to start. “If I start, I’m going to do everything I can like I have the past times I’ve started and try to go out there and win.”



<h2>Patriots clinch losing record</h2>



Regardless of what they do from now on, the Patriots will finish the 2023 NFL season with a losing record. Sitting at 2-9 after 12 weeks, there’s simply no way to avoid it. Therefore, it’s uncertain whether Belichick will make a quarterback change since it seems useless at this point.

Neither Jones nor Zappe have proven to be the answer this year, but at least the former Alabama quarterback did give reasons for optimism in the past. He made an impression in his rookie year, but took some steps back in 2022. Zappe did well in his two starts last season, but it was a very small sample size. In 2023, his time on the field was quite disappointing.



The Patriots will host the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, December 3, with not much at stake other than avoiding a fifth-straight loss that would make their year even more underwhelming.

“The teams to watch that I mentioned, the Buccaneers, Panthers, Commanders, Chargers, those are the four I’d watch most closely,” Florio said on “Pardon My Take,” via Sports Illustrated. “And of those, the one that I think is the most fascinating is the Buccaneers.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers currently sit at 4-6, which is why Florio believes hiring a big name like Belichick could help the franchise revive the excitement around the team after Brady’s retirement.



“Go out and hire a big name, put butts in the seats, they can’t get people to come to the games now that they don’t have Brady,” Florio added. “Go after Belichick, put butts in the seats, if he wins, he wins, if he doesn’t, he doesn’t, but we’re going to make money in the interim by filling up our stadium.”
