The Montreal Canadiens were steamrolled by the Boston Bruins during their last visit to TD Garden. The Canadiens sit at the bottom of the Atlantic Division and second-to-last in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>. Following yet another disappointing outing, Montreal goaltender Cayden Primeau issued a straightforward statement about their performance against historic rivals, the Bruins.



100 years after Boston’s first NHL game, the Bruins celebrated their Centennial against <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/montreal-canadiens">Montreal</a>. Emotions were high as the franchise held a pregame ceremony that featured tribute videos and appearances from franchise legends. Boston hit the ground running from the puck-drop and the Canadiens had no answers.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/boston-bruins">Boston</a> jumped into a 3-0 lead in the opening period, and eventually imposed their will over Montreal, handing them a blowout 6-3 loss. Montreal cannot get out of their own way and continues to sink in the standings with a 8-13-3 record. 



After the deflating loss to the historic opponents in Massachusets, goalie Cayden Primeau dropped a strong confession on the team’s performance.

“Anytime we come here, they give us a hard time,” Primeau said, via NHL.com. “Just as we do. But yeah, they’re a hard team. It’s hard to try to come back after trying to come back yesterday against two good teams, back to back.”

<h2>Head coach St. Louis replicates Primeau’s statement</h2>



Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis sent a concise message on the team’s shortcomings. St. Louis is coaching through his third season at the helm in Montreal, though the team still has a long way to go. 



The Canadiens struggle with their direct divisional opponents and the Bruins have them all figured out recently. Boston has a 15-0-1 record on the last 16 games against Montreal, the longest active point streak by a team against a single opponent.



“You can’t help the other team, dig yourself in a hole,” Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said. “It’s hard to play catch-up hockey on a back-to-back. It’s hard when you’re fresh, so we lacked a little bit of that.”

Since Joe Sacco took over as interim head coach in Beantown, the Bruins are 4-2-0. After the emotional win over the Canadiens, the head coach revealed what it meant for the franchise to celebrate their Centennial with a triumph.

Philip Tomasino’s game-winning goal at 7:26 of the third period secured a thrilling 2-1 victory for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/pittsburgh-penguins">Pittsburgh Penguins</a> over the Boston Bruins, marking their first winning streak in November. Assisted by Evgeni Malkin, Tomasino’s wrist shot clinched the Penguins’ second consecutive win, improving their record to 8-12-4.



“I thought tonight, our whole group did a heck of a job,” Tomasino said. He finally broke out against the New York Islanders, registering his third multi-point game of the season. 



The left-winger scored twice during the 6-2 win over New York and he now tallies eight goals and nine assists (17 points) through 24 games. After the Bruins impressive offensive outing against the Islanders, Sacco highlighted Marchand’s performance.



“He came ready to play tonight,” Sacco said, per NESN. “You can see he was winning battles. He was just ready to go and that’s what you expect from (No.) 63.”

The Bruins entered the game against the Isles with a chip on their shoulder. They came off a shutout after the 2-0 loss to the Canucks and the team was desperate to score again.

“Just had to be better in details,” Marchand said. “That’s where we’ve been having success the last little bit and what we’ll always have. That’s what the foundation of this team has always been, is executing the details and being committed to the structure. We got away from it a little bit in the second but did a great job in the third.”

Boston defenseman Charlie McAvoy made an honest statement on the team’s shortcomings.



The Bruins looked to turn the page and start from scratch after deciding to move on from coach Montgomery. They might have done that, at first, but their inconsistency came back to haunt them as the Canucks visited them at TD Garden.

“The dam is going to break at some point,” Charlie McAvoy said, via NHL.com. “Just hope it’s soon. We just got to keep playing the right way. We’re stressing defense in here, and we’re doing a great job of it, you know, and I think it has helped our offensive game. We just can’t score.”

<h2>Sacco replicates the team’s feelings</h2>



Sacco’s first loss coaching the Bruins came during his third game at the helm. Though the previous wins were not too impressive (1-0 W vs Utah, 2-1 W vs Detroit), it was a good sign of change. Following the loss, Sacco issued a clear postgame comment, similar to McAvoy’s statement.



“We just have to start burying our chances,” Joe Sacco said. “I think that we’re giving ourselves a chance to compete in games now. The guys are defending hard, like I mentioned before, but offensively, we have to get some guys going and find their scoring touch.”



<h2>Familiar face scores game-winner in return to Boston</h2>



The Canucks took the lead during the second period and held on to it for the rest of the game. The goalscorer? None other than former Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk. DeBrusk was selected by Boston in the 2015 NHL Draft and had stayed in Beantown until the last offseason. 



Since his arrival in Vancouver DeBrusk tallies six goals and eight assists through 20 games. He scored the game-winner against his former club. Following the Canucks triumph the left winger shared his feelings about returning to his old home.



“That was probably the weirdest game I’ve played probably since my first-ever game,” DeBrusk said. “That was my mental state, but the guys were great. Kept me in and kept cheering me on and stuff. You can think about anything you want to think about, but once push comes to shove and you’re on the ice, it’s about getting the two points. Obviously it means a lot to a guy like me to pull out the win.”

<h2>Montgomery’s record-breaking feats</h2>



It’s a tough business. It may sound cliché, but it really is. Montgomery led the Bruins to a historic 2022-23 regular season. The Bruins finished the campaign with 135 points and 65 wins, both record-setting accolades. However, Boston was after Lord Stanley and he isn’t won during the regular season.

Regardless, Montgomery was elected the Jack Adams Award winner, given to the best coach in the league.



The following season, Boston made the playoffs comfortably but fell in the Second Round, again to the Panthers. The seat started heating up for Montgomery and after an irregular start to the 2024-25 campaign, the Bruins front office decided it was time to move on from Jim.

Veteran forward Charlie Coyle also weighed in, expressing his desire to lead during challenging moments like the loss to Columbus. “I always want to expand my role and be more of a leader. After the game, star Matthew Tkachuk was called out by a Bruins forward.



The Bruins and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida-panthers">Panthers</a> have sparked one of hockey’s biggest rivalries in recent years. Paul Maurice’s team seems to have Jim Montgomery’s side figured out as they knocked them out of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in consecutive years. In the 24-25 season opener, this trend prevailed and the Panthers blew the Bruins out of the water.



It was a fast-paced game with no shortage of hits and fights. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/boston-bruins">Bruins</a> were looking to avenge last postseason’s incident between Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand. Caught in the crossfire was star Matthew Tkachuk, who does not shy away from the conflict, either. 



Early in the first period, the Bruins found themselves down 0-2 and being thoroughly outplayed by the Panthers. Bruins’ third-liner Trent Frederic tried to ignite his team by challenging Matthew Tkachuk to drop the gloves. However, the Panthers’ star declined, and Frederic called him out for it.

<h2>Joonas Korpisalo’s inauspicious Bruins debut</h2>



The Boston Bruins made a bold move during the offseason. The Bs traded Linus Ullmark to Ottawa in exchange for Joonas Korpisalo, a 2025 first-round draft pick and Mark Kastelic. In addition to the goalie drama, the Bruins extended Jeremy Swayman to an 8×8.25M contract on the final hours before their season opener. However, when puck dropped Swayman’s place was reserved to the away bench at the Amerant Bank Arena.



Korpisalo’s debut with the Bruins fell far short of the 30-year-old Finnish goaltender’s expectations. Under constant pressure from the start, he made some strong saves but often struggled to track the puck and was overwhelmed by the Panthers’ relentless game plan. Koorpisalo allowed six goals in 35 shots faced.



However, much of the blame falls on his teammates and the coaching staff, as they left Joonas out to dry against the Panthers forecheck. The Bruins never managed to clear the eyes for Korpisalo whose crease was crowded by the Cats throughout the night.



<h2>Bennett’s flashy start to the season</h2>



Sam Bennett was a top target on the Bruins’ checklist ahead of this rematch of last postseason’s second-round clash. Following Bennett’s infamous punch on Bruins star Brad Marchand, Boston was eager to exact some payback on the Panthers’ centerman.
