Losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime at <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl LVIII</a> was a huge blow for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>, but that didn’t change their thoughts on <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>. Despite the defeat, the franchise is glad to move forward with him as their starting quarterback.



Speaking to reporters at the scouting combine this week, Niners general manager John Lynch made it clear the 49ers feel relieved they’ve found a reliable signal-caller in Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.



“It’s a nice feeling, I know that — having stability at that position,” Lynch said, via Pro Football Talk. “People forget last year was Brock’s first full year as a starter. So I think that leaves you feeling pretty good about his opportunity with what we’ve already seen in his couple of years.“



Purdy exceeded expectations in his rookie year, proving to be up to the task when the Niners had to lean on him. With both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo out with season-ending injuries, the Iowa State product stepped up and lead the team to the NFC Championship, where a shoulder surgery forced him off the field.

He won the job for the following year and made it all the way to the big game, falling just short in Las Vegas. Either way, Lynch emphasized on the fact that Purdy is just getting started.

<h2>49ers happy to build on Purdy’s fast rise</h2>



“In particular, last year, the first full year as a starter coming off the injury, we’re past that. It just gives you a lot of confidence going in. Now, it’s like kind of building around him,” Lynch added. “It gives you a foundation to build off of and that is a really good feeling, a settling feeling.”



Purdy delivered a solid performance in the 2024 Super Bowl. Even though he couldn’t lead the Niners to victory, the second-year quarterback didn’t make costly mistakes, ending the match with zero turnovers.







The 24-year-old completed 23 of his 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown, but he was just unlucky to have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> on the other side. Only Tom Brady and Joe Burrow managed to win a playoff game against Mahomes’ Chiefs, so the Niners had nothing to complain about Purdy this time.



In fact, his ability to win the job against all odds and take the team to consecutive deep playoff runs is already enough for the Niners to feel they have the right guy at QB1. “What a terrific game he played. He’s such a quality guy, a strong Christian man, and I respect him. I think Brock Purdy… is terrific. I didn’t find many (holes in his game),” Spagnuolo added.

<h2>Brock Purdy’s fantastic path with storybook end pending</h2>



Purdy’s story is quite incredible. After being selected with the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Iowa State University product proved his ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ tag wrong by winning the 49ers’ starting job against all odds.



The Arizona native was given the reins halfway through his rookie year, with both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffering season-ending injuries. Far from struggling to settle in, Purdy led the Niners to the NFC Championship Game, where he had to leave the field due to a shoulder injury.

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton, for instance, has recently called out the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>‘ play calling while defending quarterback <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>.



“First off, let’s say this. Brock Purdy did not have a bad game,” Newton said on his ‘4th and 1’ podcast, via SB Nation. “To that point, field goal versus touchdown, that’s not Brock Purdy. Why the f— did they receive the ball first? It was Tony Romo who mentioned this — when you know what you have to get, now you have four downs to get it, not three.”



Newton was talking about the 49ers’ controversial decision to receive the ball in overtime instead of kicking it. San Francisco ended up settling for a field goal in a fourth down situation, letting the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> play their possession knowing how many points they needed to win the game. “The 49ers, they were just trying to get points,” Newton said. “And that is not Brock Purdy’s fault, that’s bad coaching. There was too many people who was exposed. They didn’t know the real rules of overtime.”



Shanahan has been questioned for opting to take the ball, and it only got worse when 49ers players admitted not knowing the new overtime rules. Newton once controversially labeled Purdy as a ‘game manager’, but now says the second-year QB did nothing wrong in the big game.

“We’re not understanding how serious this is. The fact that they weren’t addressed to what the rules were, that’s Steve Wilks, that’s Shanahan, that’s John Lynch, that’s the 49ers organization, and that’s not Brock Purdy’s fault,” Newton added about Purdy, who completed 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown. “He played good enough for his team to win. He made plays and he made plays in times of need as well.”

Now that the 49ers lost, it’s easy to blame Shanahan. In that scenario, the 49ers would have had the chance to win the game with the third possession. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> later revealed the Chiefs would have tried to win the game before San Francisco could get the ball back, though.

One of the biggest storylines after the game was that Shanahan lost on the big game for the third time. Purdy also looked heartbroken after the overtime defeat to Kansas City, but the pain wasn’t so much for himself but for failing to help Shanahan and his teammates get the ultimate prize.

“Yeah, obviously it sucks man,” Purdy said, via NBC Sports. “You want to win it for that kind of guy [head coach Kyle Shanahan]. He’s a great coach. The way he handles himself and carries himself, we all just want to win for him. Obviously, the older guys, the vets. Trent Williams, Arik Armstead and all the guys that have been through it, man, you want to win for them.“

In the 2022 NFL Draft, Carolina selected QB Matt Corral with the 94th overall pick, but they released him a year later. In the following draft, they chose Bryce Young with the 1st overall pick, but unfortunately, he has fallen short of expectations.

The second-year quarterback has definitely won the right to lead this team, but it’s not what anyone would have expected at first.



The Iowa State product was selected by the Niners with the final pick of the 2022 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> Draft, earning the label of “Mr. Irrelevant.” But Purdy turned out not to be irrelevant at all, as he ended up winning the starting job against all odds.



According to Spotrac, Purdy signed a four-year, $3,737,008 rookie deal with the 49ers upon being drafted in 2022. Needless to say, this is one of the lowest contracts for a quarterback in the entire league.

In 2023, Purdy played on a $870,000 base salary. If we break it down to 17 regular season games, it would mean he made $51,176 per game. It’s not how it works, but just to get an idea of how much his salary is worth per game.

<h2>Purdy’s unlikely path to taking the 49ers’ offensive reins</h2>



In a shocking turn of events, Purdy went from being the third-string to starter as injuries ruled Trey Lance and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jimmy-garoppolo">Jimmy Garoppolo</a> out midway through the 2022 NFL season. Far from showing any struggles, Purdy was up to the task and led the team to a deep run in that postseason. 



In fact, the Niners ended up missing him badly as Purdy suffered a shoulder injury during the NFC Championship Game. Without the rookie QB, San Francisco lost to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-eagles">Philadelphia</a>.

Nonetheless, multiple fans, analysts, and even players aren’t sold on him. They continue to hold his elite teammates and draft position against him, regardless of how well he’s played and how much he’s won already.



<h2>Purdy Says It’s A Compliment To Be A Game-Manager</h2>



Purdy has often been deemed a ‘game-manager.’ Former MVP Cam Newton even went on record to establish the difference between game-managers and game-changers by using him as an example. However, he’s not bothered by that; he actually embraces it:

“I feel like it can be a compliment at times, where it’s like, ‘Alright, you’ve got a guy that can come in and run the system well,’” Purdy told 49erswebzone. “I feel like that’s a compliment. I think you’re doing things right, mentally, and obviously, you’re good enough to be able to hit guys that are open and make plays.”



Purdy is well aware of the fact that he’s been privileged by getting the chance to play quarterback in the NFL, which is more than most people could even dream of:



“You know, there’s 32 teams in the NFL, and there’s not a lot of people that can come in and play the quarterback position well in the NFL,” Purdy said. “It’s a hard job. So, if you’re saying that I’m a game manager and I don’t look flashy in how I do it, I mean, that’s your opinion, and that’s OK.”

Purdy was an MVP candidate for most of the season. He led the league in passer rating (113.0), touchdown percentage (7.0), yards per attempt (9.6), and yards per completion (13.9) and he’s now just one win away from being a Super Bowl champion. Even so, he gets all of the blame and none of the credit.

With that in mind, QB Brock Purdy talked about having that chip on their shoulders and playing with a more aggressive mindset right out of the gate instead of waiting until the second half to take care of business. Otherwise, they won’t be able to get past an experienced team like the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kansas City Chiefs.</a>



<h2>Purdy Says The Niners Need To Embrace An Underdog Mentality</h2>



“I feel like all of us, we’re sort of learning just that chip on our shoulder, the mindset of our backs being against the wall and we need it,” Purdy told the media. “That’s when our best style of ball comes out and we all step up to the plate and play our best. So, whatever that mindset is early on, we need to get to it.”

Purdy also thinks his team needs to do a better job of executing early. As great as his defense has been to help them come back into games, he thinks they’re better when they’re aggressive right out of the gate:



“Obviously we need to do a better job with third downs early in the game and converting on those and staying on the field,” Purdy. “But I mean, when we needed to come back, we step it up, we pick it up, the intensity, everyone’s just on it and on point. So, if we can have that kind of mindset early on, just like we have all year and come out firing away, I think that’s when our defense plays well with that. So that’s something that we all have to talk about and be better at for sure. And that starts with me.”

Although Purdy was the last pick of the 2022 Draft, he took advantage of his opportunity when Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance went down. The 49ers reached the NFC Championship Game in his rookie season, but, an elbow injury derailed their hopes.



Now, Brock Purdy wants redemption in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl">NFL</a> and he’s just one victory away to do it.
