Still, Purdy has asserted his position and has proven well-worthy of a starting quarterback salary in today’s league. Yet there always seems to be a higher standard for him. And Kittle admits the QB does not shy away from it. “He’s incredibly hard on himself,” the tight end added.

Despite Purdy’s success under Kyle Shanahan’s scheme and the team’s deep playoff runs, the organization has doubts around its franchise quarterback and has not yet fully committed to him. This has also fed the division between those in favor and those against the quarterback.



Brock Purdy signed a four-year entry contract in 2022 but will soon be seeking a new deal fit for a quarterback of a Super Bowl runner-up. The Niners are in need of more time to fully evaluate their QB and will have two more seasons of Purdy until he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2026.



The front office is playing a risky game on a valuable asset. If they plan to keep Purdy for the long term, his salary increases with every day that passes by. Brock Purdy came close to completing a Cinderella story in 2024, but Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs stood on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>‘ way. The third-year quarterback, however, is determined to coming back stronger this year. And he’s inspiring on none other than Tom Brady to do so.



“With as good of a team that we have, I want to get to that point where we get to the third quarter, there’s a couple of drives that are crucial, I’m on top of my stuff, we convert on third downs, and we score touchdowns and the lead just gets out of hand,” Purdy told Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s having that Tom Brady kind of feeling. Late in the game, it always felt like Tom was just gonna take over and not make it close. I feel like I can get to that.”

It didn’t take long for Purdy to prove he’s actually relevant, leading the 49ers all the way to the NFC Championship Game in his rookie year as Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries.

“Here, in OTAs, getting with [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] and going over all the games that we played in, every play, and going over situational football and stuff, and taking that and actually going out on the field and running things and repping things, and throwing to the receivers. This fantastic evolution, however, hasn’t been translated into a lucrative deal yet, as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Purdy</a> is still under the contract he signed as a rookie two years ago. The 24-year-old made it clear he’s not thinking about this situation, though.



“I’m trying to win this year and do everything I can for this organization this year,” Purdy said Monday, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. “Everything else happens how it happens. But for me, I need to get better from last year, on the film, and the things that I saw from last year. My rookie year, it’s like I’ve got this thing in me where I want to continue to master my craft, and that’s that.“



Purdy has taken the Niners to the NFC Championship Game before suffering a shoulder injury in his rookie year, and went on to make the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> in his second year. But his earnings have been of $1.652 million so far, and his annual average salary of $934,253 makes him the 90th highest-paid QB in the NFL.

“It’s a business, obviously, too. But for me, I love this game. I love just competing with these guys in this organization,” Purdy said. “I love this organization, and I want to continue to represent myself for them, and in the right way. So that’s where I’m at with that. Getting too caught up in all that kind of stuff is, for me, that’s nonsense. So, just taking it one day at a time and getting better.”

“I just told him I’ll always have his back and support him in whatever he does,” Purdy told Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. “I want the best for him. It’s a business thing, so for me to say anything about that, that’s out of my pay grade. He and I talk through things and I hear him out. At the end of the day, what he’s done for me, giving me an opportunity to come in and throw him the ball, I’ll always be thankful for that.”



The Niners have the most talent around the league. Needless to say, that comes with a steep price tag, and they might not be able to keep the core together for much longer.

“At the end of the day, he wins football games and he plays efficient football,” Dobbs said about Purdy. “That’s all you can ask for. So that’s what I’m most excited about, just being able to obviously provide my perspective on what I’ve learned throughout the league and be able to assume whatever role that looks like this upcoming year. But to be around that and that coaching and that type of player and that type of room and that consistency, I think it’d be really good for me, and I’m excited to see what I’ll be able to add and help the team with for this upcoming year.”

<h2>Will Brock Purdy get a contract extension with 49ers?</h2>



Yes. According to CEO, Jed York, the San Francisco 49ers are already thinking in a big contract extension for Brock Purdy. The statement came in the NFL Annual League Meeting in Orlando. 


 

 


“It’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of the highest-paid guys on your team and in the league. It’s what the market is. Brock is going to ask for something that no one has ever asked for before. I don’t know how many players are making over $40 million as a quarterback right now.”

In fact, York believes it will be absolutely normal for Purdy to ask a massive deal considering how the QB market is working. It happened a few years ago for the 49ers with Jimmy Garoppolo.



“When we signed Jimmy several years ago, it was the largest deal in the history of the NFL for three minutes. But Jimmy was at $27.5 million. That’s what the market is and you have to accept the reality of the world. To me, the quarterback is the most important position not just in football, but all of sports, and those guys should be paid a lot of money.”

Losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime at <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl LVIII</a> was a huge blow for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>, but that didn’t change their thoughts on <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>. Despite the defeat, the franchise is glad to move forward with him as their starting quarterback.



Speaking to reporters at the scouting combine this week, Niners general manager John Lynch made it clear the 49ers feel relieved they’ve found a reliable signal-caller in Purdy, who was the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.



“It’s a nice feeling, I know that — having stability at that position,” Lynch said, via Pro Football Talk. “People forget last year was Brock’s first full year as a starter. So I think that leaves you feeling pretty good about his opportunity with what we’ve already seen in his couple of years.“



Purdy exceeded expectations in his rookie year, proving to be up to the task when the Niners had to lean on him. With both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo out with season-ending injuries, the Iowa State product stepped up and lead the team to the NFC Championship, where a shoulder surgery forced him off the field.

He won the job for the following year and made it all the way to the big game, falling just short in Las Vegas. Either way, Lynch emphasized on the fact that Purdy is just getting started.

<h2>49ers happy to build on Purdy’s fast rise</h2>



“In particular, last year, the first full year as a starter coming off the injury, we’re past that. It just gives you a lot of confidence going in. Now, it’s like kind of building around him,” Lynch added. “It gives you a foundation to build off of and that is a really good feeling, a settling feeling.”



Purdy delivered a solid performance in the 2024 Super Bowl. Even though he couldn’t lead the Niners to victory, the second-year quarterback didn’t make costly mistakes, ending the match with zero turnovers.







The 24-year-old completed 23 of his 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown, but he was just unlucky to have <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> on the other side. Only Tom Brady and Joe Burrow managed to win a playoff game against Mahomes’ Chiefs, so the Niners had nothing to complain about Purdy this time.



In fact, his ability to win the job against all odds and take the team to consecutive deep playoff runs is already enough for the Niners to feel they have the right guy at QB1. His annual salary for 2024 will continue to be less than $1m, but with another strong season, expect the young signal-caller to get a much better deal next year.

But far from making it all about itself, the winning side took time to recognize its opponent.



Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, for instance, revealed he texted <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a> after the game at Allegiant Stadium. In his opinion, the Niners quarterback deserved praise for his performance.



“I’ll be honest with you. I just texted Brock (Purdy) the other day,” Spagnuolo said Spagnuolo said in a recent episode of The Season with Peter Schrager podcast, as quoted by ChiefsWire.. “I tried to track down his number. I just wanted to tell him how much respect I have for him.“



While Purdy couldn’t lead San Francisco to victory, he wasn’t to blame for the team’s loss. “What a terrific game he played. He’s such a quality guy, a strong Christian man, and I respect him. I think Brock Purdy… is terrific. I didn’t find many (holes in his game),” Spagnuolo added.

<h2>Brock Purdy’s fantastic path with storybook end pending</h2>



Purdy’s story is quite incredible. After being selected with the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Iowa State University product proved his ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ tag wrong by winning the 49ers’ starting job against all odds.



The Arizona native was given the reins halfway through his rookie year, with both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffering season-ending injuries. Far from struggling to settle in, Purdy led the Niners to the NFC Championship Game, where he had to leave the field due to a shoulder injury.



Purdy then proved he was no one-season wonder, as he once again took the 49ers to a deep postseason run, this time making it all the way to the Super Bowl. His Cinderella Story didn’t have a storybook ending this time, but at 24, he still has plenty of time to keep on trying.

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton, for instance, has recently called out the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/san-francisco-49ers">San Francisco 49ers</a>‘ play calling while defending quarterback <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brock-purdy">Brock Purdy</a>.



“First off, let’s say this. Brock Purdy did not have a bad game,” Newton said on his ‘4th and 1’ podcast, via SB Nation. “To that point, field goal versus touchdown, that’s not Brock Purdy. Why the f— did they receive the ball first? It was Tony Romo who mentioned this — when you know what you have to get, now you have four downs to get it, not three.”



Newton was talking about the 49ers’ controversial decision to receive the ball in overtime instead of kicking it. San Francisco ended up settling for a field goal in a fourth down situation, letting the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> play their possession knowing how many points they needed to win the game. “The 49ers, they were just trying to get points,” Newton said. “And that is not Brock Purdy’s fault, that’s bad coaching. There was too many people who was exposed. They didn’t know the real rules of overtime.”



Shanahan has been questioned for opting to take the ball, and it only got worse when 49ers players admitted not knowing the new overtime rules. Newton once controversially labeled Purdy as a ‘game manager’, but now says the second-year QB did nothing wrong in the big game.

“We’re not understanding how serious this is. The fact that they weren’t addressed to what the rules were, that’s Steve Wilks, that’s Shanahan, that’s John Lynch, that’s the 49ers organization, and that’s not Brock Purdy’s fault,” Newton added about Purdy, who completed 23 of 38 passes for 255 yards and a touchdown. “He played good enough for his team to win. He made plays and he made plays in times of need as well.”

<h2>Kyle Shanahan wanted chance to win in sudden death scenario</h2>



Now that the 49ers lost, it’s easy to blame Shanahan. But the 49ers head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/kyle-shanahan-explains-why-he-took-the-ball-in-super-bowl-overtime-against-chiefs-20240215-BUS-105160.html">defended his decision</a> to receive first, explaining he wanted San Francisco to have possession in case the game was still tied after both teams had the ball.



In that scenario, the 49ers would have had the chance to win the game with the third possession. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> later revealed the Chiefs would have tried to win the game before San Francisco could get the ball back, though.



Either way, the Niners lost because they failed to get the job done both in offense and defense. With the ball, they only got to score three points. Without it, they were unable to stop Mahomes, who orchestrated a 75-yard drive to win the game and break the Niners’ hearts in Las Vegas.
