<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/connor-mcdavid">Connor McDavid</a> suffered an ankle injury during the Edmonton Oilers 6-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Coincidence or not, the Oilers lost their best player to injury and conceded a frustrating blowout. An Edmonton star has spoken up and issued a strong warning to the players on the team. 



Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has not been able to replicate his stellar 2022/23 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season in which he surpassed the 100-point mark. However, he has become a staple player inside the locker room and a part of the team’s core. During last season’s Stanley Cup Final run, Nugent-Hopkins contributed with 22 points in 25 games played.



Edmonton’s start to the season has fallen far short of expectations. The team is currently second-to-last in the Pacific Division, with nine points over the first ten games. However, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/edmonton-oilers">Oilers</a> also started slowly last season and still made the final round of the Playoffs, so fans should know by now not to hit the panic button just yet.



However, the team does need to play with some more urgency and with McDavid’s absence for some weeks, more players need to step up and help the Oilers get past their slump. Nugent-Hopkins sent his teammates a strong message after McDavid’s injury.

“I mean, of course, he’s our leader and also the best player in the game,” Hopkins told the media after the game. “Of course, you’re going to feel it. We got to do a better job of stepping up when a guy like that goes down, though.”

<h2>How much time will McDavid miss?</h2>



According to reports, the Oilers centerman will be sidelined for two to three weeks after sustaining an ankle injury. The incident ocurred in the very first drive of the Oilers game against the Jackets. Though McDavid walked off the ice on his own, he headed to the locker room and was ruled out for the game.



After the game, Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch commented: “It’s more ice time, more opportunity. It’s tough any time you’re playing without your best player, but it’s something that we’re going to have to. Obviously, our team’s going to look different.”



McDavid will miss some action for the second consecutive season. In the 2023/24 campaign he played in 76 out of the 82 games.

Considering McDavid will be out of the lineup during a jam-packed stretch of the schedule, the Oilers will be without their franchise cornerstone for some intense matchups. The team’s depth will be put to the test and they must step up in their Captain’s absence. Some of the biggest matchups in which McDavid likely won’t participate are:

It was not the start the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/edmonton-oilers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Edmonton Oilers </a>wanted; the runners-up to the Stanley Cup last season have seen their 49-27 record from last season turn into a winless run of three straight games against three different opponents. 



A 6-0 defeat to start the season was shocking, to say the least, against the Winnipeg Jets. Then came a 5-2 defeat to the Blackhawks, followed by a 4-1 pounding by the Flames. Losing is one thing, but getting manhandled has Oilers fans, pundits, and coaching staff very worried.



This is not unfamiliar territory for the Oilers, as last season Kris Knoblauch came in as coach after the team began the campaign 3-9-1. The rest is history, as the club would eventually reach the Stanley Cup finals and lose the series in the final game to the Florida Panthers.



<h2>Kris Knoblauch on Edmonton Oilers’ Poor Start to NHL Season</h2>



Kris Knoblauch told the media after his team’s latest defeat, “When I got here, one of the things I noticed, obviously, was the frustration,” recalling how things were when he arrived last season. “It’s only three games in. But that frustration, definitely it’s there — but not at the point that it was when I came here. But obviously, we have to correct what’s going on right now.”



Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid have gone cold to start the season; worse yet, the team is giving up a lot of goals per game, no less than four in all three matches so far.



“We’re getting beat in a lot of battles; we’re getting beat in a lot of different ways,” said Connor McDavid, assessing the situation. “The puck play has been bad all over. Guys have been fumbling it, guys not handling it. Passes in the air, passes behind guys — it’s just not good enough in terms of the puck play.”

“Obviously, we have to play with more desperation,” Knoblauch added, while Corey Perry poured cold water on the situation. “It’s a new season. There are new guys. Guys left… It’s not the same team, and we have to figure out how we want to play, the style we want to play. Right now, it’s 6-0 the first game, and then we give up another five in this game. That’s not the recipe.”

<h2>Oilers will miss key forward for considerable time</h2>



Connor McDavid will be without Evander Kane for the start of the season and some further indefinite time. However, Edmonton will rely on its other superstars on the roster. Leon Draisaitl, Zach Hyman, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Evan Bouchard will need to be at their best and provide during Kane’s absence.

Kane had surgery to repair both abductors, two hernias and two abdominal tears. Talk about hockey strong. On the other hand, Hyman is coming off a career year in which he finished third for goals with a total tally of 54. The Oilers hope for similar production from their key players as they begin their journey to redemption. 



McDavid has some big shoes to fill in Alberta, and the comparisons to Wayne Gretzky won’t quiet down anytime soon. Time is ticking for Connor and his team to win a Stanley Cup. It seems more like an issue of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’, but as the years go by, the glory has yet to return to Edmonton.
