<p>Speculation about the Lakers potentially trying to please James with their next coach is related to the player’s uncertain future. The veteran star <strong>has until June 29 to opt into or decline a player option</strong> for the 2024-25 NBA season, but <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/lakers-star-lebron-james-doesnt-deny-retirement-rumors">James doesn’t rule out retiring</a> from the game. Either way, Davis disagrees as he <strong>feels this Lakers team only needs time</strong> to finally go the distance.</p>

<p>According to Shams Charania of <em>The Athletic</em>, the purple and gold already have <strong>five coaching candidates</strong> in mind:<strong> Mike Budenholzer, Kenny Atkinson, JJ Redick, Charles Lee, and Tyronn Lue.</strong></p>



<p>“<em><strong>Whoever the Lakers hire for this job, the task will be competing for a championship,</strong></em>” Charania said on ‘Run It Back’ of FanDuel TV. “<em>This is one of the most high power jobs in the league. A lot of expectations will be on whoever that next head coach is.”</em></p>

<p><em><strong>“I don’t believe it’s realistic based on this: Ty Lue still has a year left on his contract and the Clippers are determined to do a long-term deal with Ty Lue, I’m told,”</strong></em> Wojnarowski said on <em>NBA Today</em>, via <em>ClutchPoints. “<strong>They want him to be their coach for a very long time</strong>. And so, listen, that’s a conversation that will happen after the playoffs are over, but they love the job he did this season. They love the job that he’s done there.”</em></p>



<p>Woj added that the <strong>Clippers will be looking to run things back</strong> regardless of how they fare in the 2024 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba">NBA</a> playoffs, as they plan to re-sign Paul George and James Harde while trying to upgrade the roster. And they <strong>still see Lue as the right man for the coaching job.</strong></p>

<h2>Lakers once again looking for Lue, but there’s an alternative</h2>



<p>According to Woj, the Lakers have already approached the former point guard <strong>before hiring <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/frank-vogel">Frank Vogel</a> in 2019</strong>. It makes sense, since Ty Lue <strong>knows what is like to succeed with LeBron.</strong></p>



<p><em>“Of course, the Lakers, they offered the job to Ty Lue back before Frank Vogel got it. <strong>They couldn’t come to terms on a deal and so you start to look out in the marketplace. </strong>Mike Budenholzer is probably the most accomplished coach available. He won a championship in Milwaukee, was also coach of the year in Atlanta.”</em></p>



<p>In the 2015-16, Lue took over as the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cleveland-cavaliers">Cleveland Cavaliers</a> head coach halfway through the season and went on to celebrate the NBA championship with LeBron James on the team. </p>



<p>Many years later, the Lakers may be looking to put them back together. But in the event Lue stays with the other team of the city, <strong>Mike Budenholzer could emerge as a great alternative.</strong></p>

His first boss in Los Angeles was <strong>Luke Walton</strong>, who was already in California when The King signed for the storied franchise.</p>



<p>Walton had been at the helm of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-lakers">Lakers</a> since 2016, but lost the job after failing to make the playoffs in LeBron’s first year with the team. In 2019, the organization handed the reins to <strong>Frank Vogel</strong>.</p>



<p>This hire turned out to help <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james">James</a> win his <strong>first and so far only NBA championship with the purple and gold</strong>, as the Lakers emerged victorious in the 2020 Orlando bubble under Vogel’s watch.</p>

<h2>Lakers hired Ham aiming to help LeBron, but it didn’t work</h2>



<p>In the wake of Vogel’s firing, the Lakers <strong>turned to Ham in the summer of 2022 hoping to maximize their championship window with LeBron and Anthony Davis</strong> before it was too late.</p>



<p>Having previously served as an assistant for the Milwaukee Bucks, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nba/lakers-fire-head-coach-darvin-ham-what-was-his-contract-in-los-angeles">Ham signed a four-year deal with the Lakers</a> on a reported $5 million-a-year salary, aiming to take the franchise back to the top.</p>



<p>Following a weak start to the season, the moves made by Rob Pelinka at the February trade deadline saw the Lakers have an impressive resurgence in the second half of the season to make the playoffs.</p>



<p>Ham’s team went on to have a deep run, making it all the way to the Conference Finals. However, a sweep by the Nuggets handed LA <strong>a reality check</strong>, one that the rookie HC couldn’t leave behind in his second year.</p>

Of course, this could have major implications for the future of <strong>LeBron James</strong>. This was GM Rob Pelinka’s message confirming the news. </p>



<p><em>“We greatly appreciate Darvin’s efforts on behalf of the Lakers and recognize the many accomplishments achieved over the past two seasons including last year’s remarkable run to the Western Conference finals.”</em></p>



<p>In two seasons, Darvin Ham had a record of 90-74, but, the Lakers were one of the biggest disappointments in the <strong><a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba">NBA</a></strong> with a roster led by <strong><a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/lebron-james">LeBron James</a></strong>, Anthony Davis, <strong>Austin Reaves</strong> and D’Angelo Russell. That’s why Pelinka admitted change is necessary.</p>
