For as much hype as <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/arch-manning">Arch Manning</a> and the Texas Longhorns had coming into the 2025 NCAA season, the burnt orange fell well short of expectations. Now, the school has decided to make bold tweaks to Steve Sarkisian’s coaching staff.



Coming into the year, Manning, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian">Sarkisian</a>, and Texas expected to compete for a National Championship come January. However, the Longhorns will see their season end before the ball drops in Times Square to ring in 2026. Needless to say, this isn’t how anyone in Austin expected the campaign to turn out. Now, it’s time to address certain areas and regroup. On that note, an assistant coach on Sarkisian’s staff has been relieved of his duties, as reported by Inside Texas.



Assistant coach Chad Scott’s time with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns">Longhorns</a> was short-lived. The 44-year-old had been hired by Texas in February 2025 to be the program’s running backs coach. Less than one year after, he has been shown the exit door at The Forty Acres. 



Last season, Scott had been named the interim head coach for the West Virginia Mountaineers. Scott had spent five <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> seasons with the school in Morgantown, serving as co-offensive coordinator, run-game coordinator, offensive coordinator, and running backs coach.

<h2>Texas’ run game struggled under Scott</h2>



There are several signs that help paint a clear picture on why Scott has now been fired by Texas. Redshirt sophomore CJ Baxter opting to enter the transfer portal may as well be one of them. However, it doesn’t end there.

Through 12 games in the 2025 NCAA campaign, the Longhorns have registered a total of 1,556 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns—both marks are the lowest since Sarkisian took over as head coach ahead of the 2021 season. Moreover, the fact that Manning was the team’s second-place rushing leader with 244 yards on the ground can’t be overlooked. It was the first time in Sarkisian’s Texas tenure that the Longhorns had a quarterback finish among the rushing podium.



Some may make the case that the Longhorns’ low rushing totals are a consequence of the SEC being a pass-first environment. But Texas still ranks among the bottom-five in the conference in average rushing yards per game—129.67 yards on average—only standing above LSU, South Carolina, Alabama, and Oklahoma.



<h2>Rumor mill around Texas’ next RB coach</h2>



Though still a long way out from the 2026 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> season, Sarkisian and Texas would like to fill the vacant spot on the staff as soon as possible. On that note, several reports have emerged naming potential candidates to replace Scott at the RB coach position. One name gaining significant traction as of late is former Florida Gators running backs coach and associate head coach Jabbar Juluke.

Although the Gators’ rushing stats from the past season are far from mind-blowing, the ground game’s struggles can also be credited to the overall chaos that characterized Florida’s year. Most importantly, the inconsistent passing offense frequently took the wind out of the running attack’s sails. When the opposing defense has nothing to fear through the air, it’s much easier to stack the box and neutralize the ground game. 



Still, despite the offensive woes, Juluke has shown great ability in helping Jadan Baugh blossom into a star in college football. After Texas watched Baxter enter the portal, the Horns could have great use for a coach who can help star talents reach their full potential. Needless to say, Manning and the offense would greatly benefit from having a bona fide RB1.

“We have an opportunity at the end of the regular season to do something that nobody’s done since 2019, and that’s beat three top-10 ranked teams in the regular season,” Sarkisian told reporters earlier this week.



If the Longhorns defeat the Aggies during the NCAA’s Rivalry Week, they will add it to their collection of top-10 wins, joining their triumphs over No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 9 Vanderbilt. In addition to McDonald, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Longhorns</a> face uncertainty around another key teammate of Manning. Wideout Ryan Wingo injured his right thumb during the win over Vanderbilt, but Sarkisian expects him to be good to go. “We don’t think he’s going to miss time, but I don’t think he’ll be 100% either,” Sarkisian admitted during his press conference.

His best moment was in the opening play of the match, as he took a screen pass 75 yards to the house to set up the tempo for Manning and the Longhorns. Needless to say, if Wingo is unable to play against the Georgia Bulldogs on Nov. 15, Manning and company will be in for trouble.



<h2>True test</h2>



Though Texas has escaped with victories during recent visits to SEC rivals Kentucky and Mississippi State, the Longhorns will face their biggest road test yet when they take on the Dawgs at Sanford Stadium. Manning and the Horns will enter a hostile environment with no margin for error. After disappointing outings against Ohio State and Florida away from home, Manning must prove he can handle the pressure when he steps into a sold-out, rowdy crowd in Athens, Georgia.



However, that’s much easier said than done as the Dawgs are 35-1 in their last 36 games at home. Alabama snapped the program’s 33-win home streak earlier this season, but since Georgia has bounced back with two wins in Athens over SEC opponents. Before fans in the country realize, the Dawgs might put together another record-breaking win streak. It’s up to Manning, Sarkisian, and the Longhorns to stop the No. 5 Bulldogs by delivering a crushing blow to Kirby Smart’s side.

The final score may not indicate it, but <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/arch-manning" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arch Manning</a> and the Texas Longhorns played their best game of the NCAA season during the 34-31 win over the Vanderbilt Commodores. After the game, head coach Steve Sarkisian voiced a sincere statement for everybody on the locker room to hear.



You hear it on every level of football. From pee-wee to the big leagues, protecting the quarterback is priority number one for every team. In <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college football</a>, the recipe for success isn’t any different. Texas may have figured that out the hard way, but at least it seems to be a learned lesson in Austin. During the home win over the Commodores, Manning enjoyed the cleanest pocket he’s had all year at The Forty Acres.



Coming into the game after a week in the NCAA’s concussion protocol, keeping Manning out of harm’s way couldn’t have been stressed more by Sarkisian and his staff. Needless to say, the Longhorns were up for the task. For the first time in the year, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Texas</a> allowed 0 sacks to an SEC opponent. After the game, Sarkisian handed the team its flowers.



“This was the best protection [Manning has] gotten all year,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sarkisian</a> said postgame, via ESPN. “I thought Arch, to his credit, helped them. He did some things in protection to pick some things up to allow us to throw it down the field, but it allowed him to get through reads.”

<h2>Paid off</h2>



Vanderbilt walked into Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with one goal in mind: breaking the hearts in Bat City and ending the Longhorns’ hopes early in the college football campaign. However, Manning and company got off to a hot start. Clearly, the burnt orange was energized upon playing their first home game in over a month in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NCAA</a> campaign.

“I think we’re very hungry. I think this team has grown very close together,” Sarkisian said per Inside Texas. “I didn’t love our schedule, the fact that we were going to be gone for 42 days from home. 



“In the end, it was probably the best thing for us. It was probably the thing we needed, this group to really grow together, lock arms, battle, compete, and fight for one another with one another for a common goal. They know the work’s not done.”



<h2>Setting the tone</h2>



On the very first play of the game, Manning found wideout Ryan Wingo behind the line of scrimmage to set up a screen play. In the blink of an eye, Wingo got a block and found an opening to escape on a straight run for a 75-yard touchdown. It was an almost utopic start to the noon showdown for the Longhorns, who kept the foot on the gas pedal during the first half. Vanderbilt pushed back late, but Texas managed to hold on for a much needed ranked victory in the SEC.

Not much went Vanderbilt’s way during its stay in Austin. The Commodores’ defense had averaged 2.6 sacks per game going into the matchup. However, against Texas’ offensive line — which had allowed 18 sacks in eight outings — Vandy struggled to get to Manning. 



<h2>New Manning</h2>



Now, the lesson is there for the taking in the SEC: if a defense gives Manning a clean pocket and time to operate, it’s in for a very long day in the Forty Acres. Moreover, Sarkisian warned the rest of the league about the growth spurt Manning has been on since becoming one household name in college football.

“I do think [Manning’s] grown up,” Sarkisian noted. “He just looks so much more mature, so much more poised. He looks so much more confident, and he’s got a lot more trust in those guys around him.”
