The No. 5 Texas Longhorns came to a difficult decision and let a promising offensive weapon walk out on Steve Sarkisian’s program. The Longhorns head coach explained why the school moved on from a talented receiver for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/arch-manning">Arch Manning</a> and Quinn Ewers.



The Longhorns have their eyes set on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">College Football</a> Playoffs. Though not officially in, the school in Austin is looking as a top contender for the postseason. However, they cannot get over themselves, as they face a big challenge up next. 



The Horns will take on the Gators in a big SEC matchup. QB1 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/quinn-ewers">Quinn Ewers</a> will be under some scrutiny as he has struggled since his return to the lineup. Against Florida he will have some ground to cover, but will be without one key wide receiver.



Sophomore WR Johntay Cook II has left the school’s program, and so the Horns will be without the skill player who produced for eight catches, 137 yards, and two TDs on the season. After the news broke out, head coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian">Sarkisian</a> explained why the 19-year walked out and sent a big message.

“It was mutual between the two of us,” Sarkisian stated, via Sports Illustrated. “I think that we have some living examples on our roster today of guys that maybe weren’t frontline starters in Year 1 or Year 2 and then developed into really productive players in Year 3 or even in Year 4. And so I try not to fall prey to that. That’s just what’s going to happen, but I understand it when it does happen.”

<h2>Cook fell down on depth chart</h2>



Cook was affected by recent signings to the program and had lost some ground on the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns">Longhorns</a>‘ depth chart. Although the sophomore had his best games with Manning under center, the five star recruit who joined the Forty Acres alongisde Arch decided to flee the ship. 



Cook was expected to become one of the leading receivers for the future years Longhorns. With only a small sample size, Manning and Cook showcased some good chemistry and looked promising to be stellar <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> duo going forward into next season. However, he didn’t envision himself in Austin and came to an agreement to move on from the burnt orange.

The Texas Longhorns are one of the standout teams this season in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">NCAAF</a> and aim to reaffirm their status as contenders this weekend when they face none other than the Florida Gators. In a crucial matchup for both teams’ aspirations, head coach Steve Sarkisian made it clear what kind of opponent they will be up against.



Behind them is their last victory on October 26 against Vanderbilt, and led by Quinn Ewers, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns">Longhorns</a> are already focused on what’s ahead: the final stretch of the season. Aiming to improve their record to 7-1, their closest target is none other than Billy Napier’s Gators.

With their guard up and refusing to underestimate their opponent, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian outlined his plans to slow down Florida this weekend: “They’re going to run their offense and that’s what we have to prepare for,” the HC stated.

<h2>Sarkisian is confident in Ewers’ current form</h2>



One of the ongoing debates throughout the Longhorns’ season has been who should be the starting QB: <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/quinn-ewers">Quinn Ewers</a> or Arch Manning. Aside from the injury he suffered a few weeks ago, the head coach has consistently believed that Ewers would be his starter for the duration of the season.



For the upcoming game, following a weekend off, it appears that the coach will once again stick with the same system, relegating <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/arch-manning">Arch Manning</a> to the bench once more.



“I thought Quinn had a good week,” Sarkisian said. “He looks fresh, he looks healthy. He’s really delivering the ball well. I like his base that he’s operating with. Thought he was really intentional with his feet, with his base against Vanderbilt, and it showed.”

Quinn Ewers is back healthy for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns">Texas Longhorns</a>; however, the quarterback has not shown the same level of play he did before his abdominal injury on September 14. Since Ewers’ return, Steve Sarkisian’s Texas team is 2-1, with some calling for Arch Manning to step in. While his QB1 role isn’t at risk, Ewers recently shared what’s been holding him back on the field.



Coming into this season, Ewers was among the top candidates in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> for the Heisman Trophy. Those days seem far behind and at the moment the Longhorns QB is under heavy scrutiny for his irregular performances against the top programs. The injury sustained earlier this year is a factor, but weeks have gone by now. However, Ewers confessed it has affected him upon his return.

The Longhorns have seen first-hand how costly an injury bug can be to their aspirations. As the team hopes to extend their <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season up into late January, the roster’s depth may be put to the test and Sarkisian forewarned the youngsters in the Forty Acres campus: Texas will take no passengers.

Following a crushing loss, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns">Texas Longhorns</a> had no time to dwell on the defeat, and visited the Vanderbilt Commodores in a game that could make or break their season. Consecutive losses would have been catastrophic, and though Texas avoided that scenario, head coach Steve Sarkisian has sent a strong message to his team, and more specifically its freshmen.



The No. 6 Longhorns barely survived the critical game against the Commodores. A 27-24 victory sufficed the team’s urge to get back on the win column, but it was far from the team’s standard. The performances fans had grown accustomed earlier in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season have waned, and Sarkisian and the Longhorns are now in survival mode.



After the game, Coach <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian">Sarkisian</a> forewarned the younger players on the team, as the roster has been affected by an injury bug at times this year.

<h2>Longhorns injuries</h2>



Aside from the most obvious example when mentioning the Horns injuries this season, Texas has suffered significant blows to several position groups. The running back room has been short of players lately as two members went down with season-ending injuries; CJ Baxter and Christian Clark. Velton Gardner is questionable with an undisclosed injury.

<h2>Longhorns’ big test against the Gators</h2>



Texas is currently on a bye week. However, upon return they will take on a historic program in the SEC in a must-win game. The Longhorns will host the 4-3 (2-2 SEC) Florida Gators. However, that record will look different when these two sides meet. Before squaring off with Texas, Florida will play Georgia in what will be two critical weeks for the program in Gainesville.

The Longhorns had their backs against the wall as they visited Vanderbilt. Following the too-close for comfort win, Coach Sarkisian sent a strong message to his team.



“When you get so emotionally invested into a game like we were last week, and then you don’t play your best, it’s tough,” <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian">Sarksian</a> commented, via On3. “It’s tough on coaches, it’s tough on a team to rebound, and I think how many times we’ve seen a team lose a game like that, and then they get beat again the next week, because they’re still they’re still going through it.



“And I thought this game tonight was a culture, was a toughness win for us. I’m really proud of our players and their preparation. I was proud of the way they handled the adversity tonight.”

<h2>Tale of two halves</h2>



Quinn Ewers has had yet another irregular performance. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/texas-longhorns">Texas</a> quarterback shoots himself on the foot often times, though he has proved capable of mending his errors. Ewers threw for 288 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Longhorns signal caller was picked off on his first pass of the game. He bounced back and led three TD drives in the first half. However, on the second half the offense failed to reach the endzone and settled for field goals. Vanderbilt closed down on a 14-point lead and Texas barely survived as they walked away with the 27-24 victory. Sarkisian voiced his thoughts on Ewers’ play.



“I love the response Quinn had after the tipped ball interception. I think he completed 17 balls in a row with three touchdowns for over 200 yards. So again, just who he is, was super impressed by him.”



Despite the win over another Top-25 opponent, Texas has fallen back a spot in the AP <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> rankings and is now in sixth place.

After the triumph in the Red River Shootout, Sarkisian’s team fell to the Bulldogs and the bubble may have burst on their dream season. Though frustration is palpable in Austin, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/vanderbilt">Vanderbilt</a> HC Clark Lea made a big admission on how the Longhorns could fuel off it, rather than drown in it.



“It can swing either way,” Clark Lea said, per On3. “When we’ve had a tough loss, the game at Missouri, there’s a world where that can be taken as heartbreaking, and how do you come back from that? How devastated is the locker room? Or you can take it and say the guys will be motivated, they’re so close, they’re going to keep inching towards that breakthrough. I think you can take that and go either way with it.”

<h2>Clark Lea on preparing for Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning</h2>



When <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/steve-sarkisian">Steve Sarkisian</a> subbed out Ewers and put Manning into the game against Georgia, he didn’t just send a message to the locker room but to the rest of the NCAA watching. Much talk had focused on the Longhorns’ depth at quarterback and how Sarkisian might play both QBs depending on game situations. That may come to fruition, and Vanderbilt will not be risking coming out flat-footed with their defensive gameplan.

“I believe that this is a system on offense that doesn’t change dramatically with respect to who’s taking the snaps,” Clark Lea stated. “So, we’re preparing to defend the system. Obviously, both quarterbacks have played so I wouldn’t be surprised to see both. They got injury history there and you just never know.“



<h2>Can Vanderbilt talk Playoffs yet?</h2>



The Commodores are one of the biggest Cinderella stories in the country. After their statement triumph over Bama, the program has built on their success and strung together consecutive wins to earn a place in the AP Top-25. 



Though they are still a long way from earning a playoff berth, the team does not shy away from dreaming of making the extended <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> postseason, however, coach Lea was wary on his thoughts.



“With respect to the potential of what this year could come to, is the understanding that we’re going to have to play really well from here to the finish line have a chance at the postseason. So we’re not getting ahead of our skis.”
