Now, the former UConn superstar won’t be the best player on the court night in and night out like it usually happened in college. She now has to earn her stripes in the WNBA.



That’s why, shortly after making her preseason debut with the Dallas Wings, the first-overall pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft shared her thoughts on her transition to the pros.



<h2>Paige Bueckers opens up on her goals for her rookie season</h2>



“I think tonight it’s about using my voice and continuing to organize as the point guard—the quarterback of the offense,” Bueckers told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “Making sure everyone’s where they’re supposed to be, and if not, we can talk about it in the huddle. Like I’ve mentioned before, screen navigation is important. I want to create plays for others, push in transition, and stay solid in transition defense. Just continuing to find ways to impact the game.”

After being selected as the No. 8 pick (20th overall) in the second round of the 2025 WNBA Draft, Bree Hall has become a free agent after the Indiana Fever cut her on Monday. The Fever made the decision hours after Hall clocked in 16 minutes against the Brazilian National Team on Sunday. She finished the game with nine points and four rebounds in the second preseason game scheduled for the Fever ahead of the 2025 WNBA season.

“Bree’s an elite defender,” Staley said. “It’s elite – the things that she does, the people that she has to guard. In my 25 years of coaching, she’s on my all-time defensive team – all the players that I’ve coached – because she’s very consistent with it, and she relishes the challenge.”



Hall was the second draft selection the Fever made on April 14, right after they selected Florida State Forward Makayla Timpson with the No. 7 pick in the round, with the selection they got in a trade with the Phoenix Mercury. Bree Hall averaged 5.8 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while shooting 39.9% from the field.

“I think the thing that Geno shares, and he will share it in press conferences, is that you’ve gotta live with her, because she’s so intelligent, you’ve got to live with some of the gambling that she does,” Miller said. “He shared some stories that, instead of locking and trailing, attacking and tracing a great player off of a screen, she shoots a gap to go make a momentum-changing steal in a game. And sometimes it doesn’t always work out.”

Still without Caitlin Clark, ‘Unrivaled,’ the new 3v3 league co-founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, has signed another <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wnba">WNBA</a> star: Alyssa Thomas. The 32-year-old Connecticut Sun forward is headed to Miami as the player No. 31.



Thomas, who is currently a free agent, has accepted the lucrative offer from the new league instead of her usual plan of going overseas during the offseason. In her 11-year career, the star has played in countries such as South Korea, China, Prague and Turkey.



In the inaugural season of Unrivaled, players will reportedly earn an average salary of more than $200,000, as well as getting equity rights. She joins other stars such as her teammates Alyssa Thomas and DiJonai Carrington, as well as Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese.



From Indiana Fever, Aliyah Boston and Lexie Hull are the only players to have confirmed their participation in the league. As Unrivaled still waits for Clark’s confirmation, the league has already expanded to 36 players instead of the initial 30 as they landed a TV deal with TNT Sports to broadcast the games., Washington Mystic center Stefanie Dolson was also announced today as the new signing.


 


<h2>Unrivaled will try a new 3v3 format</h2>



The league will consist of six teams, each made up of six players, competing in a 3v3 format. The teams will play in a round-robin format for the first six weeks, with the top four advancing to a two-week postseason. Additionally, a season-long 1v1 tournament will be held.



Collier shared on X that a selection committee will allocate players to teams based on position and skill, aiming to keep competition balanced. All the teams will be announced on November 20th. On the other hand, unlike standard FIBA rules, games will be played on a 70-by-50-foot court, with four quarters, a game clock, and a shot clock.



<h2>When does Unrivaled start?</h2>



The first season of Unrivaled will span eight weeks, beginning on January 17, 2025 in Miami, Florida. After six weeks of round-robin play, the top four teams will advance to a two-week postseason. Additionally, a 1v1 tournament will run throughout the season.

During her first year in the WNBA, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/caitlin-clark">Caitlin Clark</a> made history with the Indiana Fever, earning Rookie of the Year honors and leading the team to the Playoffs. However, the guard recently shared that her draft experience left her feeling “upset.”



Speaking on the Fresh Tawk podcast, Clark revealed that being selected No. 1 overall by the Fever came with unexpected challenges. She explained that after shaking hands with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/wnba">WNBA</a> Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, she was quickly ushered away, leaving her with little time to celebrate with her family, friends, and loved ones.



“I was so upset because after I got drafted, I just got dragged out immediately and didn’t get to see any of the draft,” Clark said to her former Hawkeyes teammates Kate Martin, Gabbie Marshall, and Jada Gyamfi.



“I had my phone, but I couldn’t really use it. It made me so upset. And then, I didn’t even get to see Kate get drafted. It really upset me,” she added. “I didn’t even take pictures with you guys, my family, like Connor [McCaffery], like no one.”

Taurasi published an Instagram post featuring several ads for the notes feature of the app with her face that included the emojis of one finger up and the ballerina, which presumably mean “one last dance.” Meanwhile, the caption reads: “Keep ‘em guessing.”



However, ESPN’s Michael Voepel claridied the rumors with a post on X: “The Instagram ad with Diana Taurasi was done before the WNBA season ended and has appeared elsewhere before today. It’s not intended as a ‘message’ about her future plans or anything else, her agent told ESPN.“

White explained that her decision to leave Connecticut was both personal and professional, stating that it was the best choice for her family and career. She returns to a franchise where she spent five years as a player, followed by stints as an assistant coach (2011-2014) and head coach (2016).

With Unrivaled’s recent expansion, from 30 to 36 players, the question that still looms is whether Caitlin Clark will join the new league or not. With a<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/sports/unrivaled-to-copy-mls-lionel-messi-strategy-to-persuade-wnba-star-caitlin-clark"> “Lionel Messi-type offer” on the table</a>, Indiana Fever’s views on the matter have been disclosed by Sports Business Journal.



According to their report, the Fever would like <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/caitlin-clark">Clark</a> to not join the league, however, they won’t get in her way if she wants to. “They recognize that if it’s a Lionel Messi type offer, you’re not going to tell her don’t,” one source close to the Fever told SBJ. “But they hope she doesn’t. They want to provide her with an environment [in Indiana] where there’d be no reason to do anything else.”



“That’s the focus. That’s their hope. But do they think [Unrivaled] is going to throw her some [exorbitant] offer? Of course, they do. Because what else are they [Unrivaled] going to do?” added the source.



According to reports, Clark is being offered over a $1 million to join the 3v3 league, among other benefits, such as equity opportunities. Alex Bazell, president of Unrivaled, which was co-founded by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier, has said that they will always have a spot open for the Fever guard.

“She knows that we have a spot for her when she’s ready,” Bazzell told Sportico, last week. “We’re proud of what we’ve built, and we’re positioned to succeed. But if she played, she’d take it to another level… She knows we would love to have her.”

<h2>Clark is reportedly still considering the offer</h2>



Per The Daily Mirror US, Clark has not decided yet whether she will join the league, but the discussions between her and Unrivaled have been “positive.” Per a source, her decision could be known in the upcoming weeks.



“Ultimately, they’re not applying pressure and just building the league, and hopefully she joins, because if she does, it would have a dramatic impact in a positive way,” one source familiar with Unrivaled said, according to the outlet. “But they don’t even have a timetable on when that decision is coming.”

“It’s like recruiting someone. It’s a decision that can go either way. There are only two answers. I think one way or another, any player that doesn’t play this year, I think once they see it, it’s just going to be hard not to want to join,” they said. 



Angel Reese, Kelsey Plum, DiJonai Carrington, Arike Ogunbowale, Jackie Young and more have already signed in with the new league. Meanwhile, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/indiana-fever">Fever</a>’s teammates Lexie Gull and Aliyah Boston were the latest additions to the roster.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/indiana-fever">Indiana Fever</a> hired Stephanie White as their head coach for the 2025 season, after weeks of speculation. Caitlin Clark, who became one of the biggest stars of the WNBA after her rookie season, didn’t waste time to celebrate the announcement on social media.



In a comment to the Fever’s Instagram post announcing White’s appointment, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/caitlin-clark">Clark</a> wrote, “Fevvvvv shooowwwwwww”. The guard’s feelings aren’t surprising, considering that White is one of the most respected head coaches in the league, and she has been open with her admiration in the past.



“She has obviously called a lot of my games all throughout college, and I just think she has a really great basketball mind,” during a Fever press conference earlier this year. “I think she has done a great job calling college games… She’s a trailblazer, honestly. I think she has always been somebody who has been supportive of my game, and it has been fun to talk to her at shootarounds,” Clark admitted.



With White in charge, the Sun went 55-25 in the regular season and 7-7 in the playoffs in two seasons. Ahead of next season, the league now has six franchises in search of coaches, after Chicago Sky also found a new leader in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/sports/angel-reeses-optimistic-reaction-to-chicago-skys-new-head-coach-tyler-marsh">Tyler Marsh, with Angel Reese’s approval.</a>

Speaking to ESPN, White also praised Clark. “I spoke with Caitlin last night. Just overall, excitement. I’ve been watching Caitlin play since she was an 8th grader when I was coaching in college and covering her games. Just an exciting time for me, very excited to be working with her and this young team,” she said.

<h2>White’s story with the Indiana Fever</h2>



White’s predilection with Indiana is not a surprise. Especially, as she played for the Fever for five seasons, from 2000 to 2004. As an assistant coach, she was part of the team from 2011 and 2014, before becoming head coach for the 2015-16 season.



When it comes to Clark, it’s clear they respect each other. After the Fever lost to the Sun in their opener, White was one of the first defenders of the guard, asking people “to chill out” in their criticism of the young player. Now, she believes she “is a student of the game.” 



“I just can’t wait. She’s a student of the game, loves the game of basketball. She has been so great in how she’s handled all of the attention. She just wants to play, just wants to win, and I’m looking forward to coaching players like that,” she said to ESPN.
