Mitch Marner’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs remains uncertain, as the star forward is set to become a free agent on July 1. In the midst of a major rebuild, the franchise led by Auston Matthews is starting to envision a future without one of its top players in the 2025-26 NHL season.
Marner is in the final year of his six-year, $65.4 million contract with the Maple Leafs, signed in September 2019. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $10.9 million, is set to expire on July 1, 2025. At this point, there’s little indication that the two sides will reach a new agreement.
The 28-year-old winger reportedly expressed interest in signing an eight-year extension worth $104 million, an average of $13 million per season. However, Toronto’s front office has shown reluctance to commit to such a high number. As a result, new potential destinations have started to emerge.
Where will Mitch Marner play next?
According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, Marner has prepared a list of eight teams he would be willing to join if no extension is reached with the Maple Leafs. Everything seems possible in the future of the standout player from Paul Maurice’s former franchise.
The list includes teams from both the Eastern and Western Conference, such as the Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Anaheim Ducks. These franchises have reportedly shown interest in the talented forward and possess the necessary cap space to offer a competitive contract.
A unique condition
While not all eight teams on Marner’s list have been revealed, one particular condition stands out, he would reportedly prefer not to join any of the six Canadian teams. The Maple Leafs forward appears ready for a change of scenery and is leaning toward continuing his career in the U.S.
