Chile are in a complicatesituation to qualify to the next World Cup. Before Matchday 17, La Roja wasin seventh place with 16 points, 1 less than Colombia (6th) and 3 less than Uruguay (5th) who are keepingtheplace in the playoffs. Somewhat further away are Peru, who with 20 points would be the last team to qualify.
The last World CupQualifiers, Chile was one of the great disappointments of the Conmebol. After having a great participation in theBrazil2014World Cup, and having been champions of the 2015 and 2016 Copa América, it was assumed that the Chileans would be one of the teams that qualified for Russia 2018.
However, a series of poor results, combined with a great performance by Peru in the last part of the Qualifiers, surprisingly left the Chilean team out. Now “La Roja” trust not to repeat that sad story of Russia 2018, however, at the moment they are very complicated.
Do Chile still have a chance?
Chilecan still qualify to the 2022 World Cup, despitelosing to Brazil 4-0 in the Maracana and because Uruguay defeated Peru in Montevideo. La Roja need at least three points against Uruguay and that Perú and Colombia don’t win their last matches to earn a play-offs spot.
It was a tough match for Chile, as Brazil didn’t have any mercy for them. Neymar Jr. opened the scoring with a penalty at the 44th minute, and since then, La Roja couldn’t do any damage to the locals.
Vinicius Jr. made the second just one minute after. While the visitors tried to respond, Coutinho and Richarlison expanded the advantage in the second half. While Chilehadreached the knockout stages in two of the past three World Cup tournaments, they now will missQatar.
