Portugal delivered a controlled but ultimately frustrating 1–1 draw against DR Congo in Houston, in a 2026 FIFA World Cup opener marked by Cristiano Ronaldo’s tournament debut and long stretches of Portuguese dominance that didn’t translate into a winning goal.
The breakthrough arrived in the 6th minute, when João Neves timed his run perfectly, met a precise delivery into the box, and guided a composed header into the net to give Portugal a deserved 1–0 lead. The early goal allowed Roberto Martínez’s side to dictate tempo, circulate the ball with confidence, and force DR Congo to defend deep for much of the first half.
But deep into stoppage time, DR Congo struck back. In the 45+4th minute, Yoane Wissa reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the area and fired a sharp finish past Diogo Costa to level the match. The equalizer shifted momentum, and although Portugal pushed late, the go‑ahead goal never arrived.
The result gives DR Congo a valuable point to open their World Cup campaign, while Portugal leave Houston with mixed feelings: a strong start, a dominant performance in stretches, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut, but also missed chances that kept them from taking all three points.
