Gerrit Cole isn’t on the mound for the Yankees right now, but he’s still stepping into a mentoring role when needed. Recently, he revealed what he told Will Warren ahead of the young pitcher’s first career start at Dodger Stadium — a tough stage for any debut.
According to Bryan Hoch, Cole offered Warren a brief but pointed piece of advice: “You’re going to have the most adrenaline of your life.” What Cole couldn’t have predicted was just how poorly the outing would go. Warren lasted just 1.1 innings and gave up seven earned runs in a disastrous start.
Cole’s advice didn’t do much to calm the nerves, as Warren was shelled by the Dodgers — allowing six hits, four walks, and recording just two strikeouts in what turned into a complete meltdown.
Dodger Stadium Shows No Mercy
Warren struggled from the very first inning, a disappointing performance for a pitcher who came into the game with a 4.09 ERA and a 3–2 record over 11 starts. He wasn’t the Yankees’ top arm, but there was growing confidence in him.
Cole’s last appearance at Dodger Stadium came during the 2024 World Series — a strong personal performance, but the Yankees lost that game. Expectations were high for Warren, who had posted a 2.70 ERA in 26.2 innings pitched in May heading into the matchup.

Warren’s Worst Start Yet
Unfortunately for Warren, his Dodger Stadium debut now stands as the worst outing of his young MLB career in terms of runs allowed. His previous low point came against the Rays, when he gave up five runs in a 7–5 Yankees loss.
