Jazz Chisholm Jr. is well aware that the New York Yankees need defensive improvements, and during spring training ahead of the 2025 MLB season, the team has already shown some adjustments. Chisholm took the opportunity to speak about what could be a much-improved defense for the Bronx Bombers this year.
In recent comments, Chisholm expressed confidence in the Yankees’ infield, stating, “I think we could be the best shortstop-second baseman in the league, definitely defensively.” With the likelihood that he will play second base, his belief in the team’s defensive potential is clear.
Beyond praising the infield’s ability, Chisholm also hinted that the Yankees could be one of the best MLB teams at turning double plays. “And I think we are probably going to turn the most double plays in the league, too,” he added, signaling high expectations for the team’s defensive efficiency.
During the 2024 season, the Yankees averaged 0.69 double plays per game, ranking 23rd in that category. However, by the end of the season, they led all of MLB with 138 total double plays across 162 games, finishing five ahead of the Padres, who recorded 133.

What Makes a Team Successful at Turning Double Plays?
A team’s ability to turn double plays depends on strong infield defense, good pitching, and smart positioning. Groundball-heavy pitchers create more chances, while quick and skilled middle infielders are key to executing them efficiently. Teams that position their defense well and frequently have runners on first with less than two outs will see more opportunities. A good catcher, smooth transitions, and even a bit of luck also play a role in racking up double plays throughout a season.

Chisholm Jr double plays in 2024
During the 2024 season, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was on the receiving end of six double plays. However, they had little impact on what was otherwise a strong overall performance for him throughout the year.
