The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Opening Day game against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo will already be special, but it could become even more memorable for Max Muncy if he records a hit that day.

Max Muncy is on the verge of joining one of MLB’s most exclusive lists—one that features players who have achieved rare and difficult records. Specifically, he has a chance to etch his name into history during the Los Angeles Dodgers’ matchup against the Chicago Cubs in an international game.

According to stats compiled by Sarah Langs and Elias Sports Bureau, Muncy needs just one hit in Tokyo to become only the fourth player to record a hit in five different countries. He has already collected hits in Canada, Mexico, South Korea, and, of course, the United States.

As a World Series champion, Muncy has a clear path to achieving this record and joining the exclusive list of players that includes Xander Bogaerts, Paul Goldschmidt, and Edgardo Alfonzo. The latter has been retired from MLB for over a decade.

The 2024 season was notably short for Muncy due to an oblique injury that sidelined him for three months. However, he made a strong return just in time to secure his second ring with the Dodgers, contributing three home runs during the playoffs.

Muncy is a veteran who can achieve it all with the Dodgers

After seven long seasons with the Dodgers, Muncy has established himself as a versatile player capable of contributing across the board for the franchise. In 2021, he had one of his best seasons, recording 592 plate appearances and setting career highs with 36 home runs. In 2023, he matched that home run total while also delivering 102 hits and 105 RBIs, further solidifying his value to the team.

The Series After Tokyo

The Dodgers will return to the United States to play their first series on American soil against the Tigers on March 27. This will give them nearly ten days to recover from their trip to Japan, where they will play just two games against the Cubs. On March 31, they will kick off a new series against the Braves.
