The Philadelphia Phillies have a true ace in their rotation—one who’s bailed them out multiple times this season. But Zack Wheeler is doing more than just carrying the team—he’s now cemented his place in franchise history with a stat line no other Phillies pitcher has ever reached.
According to a report from John Clark, Wheeler became the first pitcher in Phillies history to record five starts in a single season with 10 or more strikeouts and zero walks in each game. No other pitcher in franchise history has accomplished that feat.
One of those dominant outings came against the Boston Red Sox, where Wheeler tossed six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out 10 and walking none.
Phillies went undefeated in all five games
Even more impressive: the Phillies won all five of those starts, with Wheeler personally earning the win in four of them. His first win of the year came during one of those outings, a strong start against the Colorado Rockies.
The five historic games included:
- April 2 vs Rockies: 10 K, 0 BB
- April 18 vs Marlins: 13 K, 0 BB
- June 30 vs Padres: 10 K, 0 BB (no home runs allowed)
- July 6 vs Reds: 12 K, 0 BB
- July 21 vs Red Sox: 10 K, 0 BB
While he did allow home runs in four of the five outings, none of them involved giving up free passes—a testament to his elite control and command.
The ace of the rotation
Beyond this record-setting stretch, Wheeler has been the clear standout in the Phillies rotation this season. Through 20 starts, he owns a 9–3 record and a 2.39 ERA. He’s been a consistent force on the mound, especially as other starters have dealt with inconsistency and struggles throughout the season.
