The Indianapolis Colts could be placing their attention ona new quarterback after their starting spot was left empty. The AFC team has a very good squad but they need the centerpiece of their project; fortunately, they could land a player with all the characteristics they want.

Philip Rivers is officially a former NFL quarterback after he announced his retirement on Wednesday, ending a 17-year career shared between the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts.

That has left Indy without a quarterback but that couldn’t last that long, as there are candidates to take over and lead the team to compete in the AFC. They already have good pieces, they’re only missing a quarterback to put the offense together.

Indianapolis Colts could trade for Sam Darnold of the New York Jets

This 2020/21 NFL season saw the New York Jets miss out on their chance to land Trevor Lawrence from Clemson and now the Jacksonville Jaguars will have the right to get the talented quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL draft.

Although they have stated their intentions to keep Sam Darnold as their starting QB, that doesn’t shut down the possibility of the Jets trading the player if they receive the right offer. According to Matt Zemek of USA Today, this is exactly what can happen if the Colts decide to pull the trigger on this move.

[Frank] Reich has to be pleased that he can now search for one of two quarterbacks:

1. A veteran who still has some fastballs left to throw and can be a difference-maker on a “win-now” team, OR

2. A young quarterback of the future who can become Andrew Luck, only without the injuries and with a long pro career.

If Reich is more interested in Door No. 2, however, and wants to get started on the process of cultivating a quarterback for the long run, he knows what’s in front of him.

If the New York Jets do intend to draft Justin Fields this spring, you can do the math: Sam Darnold would be a prime target for Reich and the Colts. It’s now a very legitimate possibility that Darnold could come to Indianapolis.

This is a very good opportunity for the Colts to land a quarterback that can become their Andrew Luck, as Zemek said, and lead the team to the promised land. They showed they can compete this season and a good quarterback along with a couple of pieces could take the Colts to be one of the contenders in the AFC.

This is the first round of rumors and we’ll probably hear more from the Colts and the Jets. Zemek even named more players the Colts could consider in the future, but right now, the possibility of Darnold landing in Indianapolis is one that a lot of people like.
