Justin Fields moved on from his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and began a new chapter with the New York Jets, aiming to become the teamâs starting quarterback following Aaron Rodgersâ tenure. During preparations for the 2025 NFL season, the former Chicago Bears player suffered a significant setback.
During the morning practice, Fields injured his right leg and was taken to the locker room for a thorough evaluation. âHe ran an 11-on-11 play and came under pressure. Then, the Jets halted team drills to switch to special teams while Fields limped toward the sideline,â reported insider Zack Rosenblatt on his X account (formerly Twitter).
Fieldsâ injury could significantly impact the Jetsâ outlook for the next season, especially considering the franchise had positioned him as a potential long-term starter following the end of Rodgersâ era. With Fields expected to compete for the QB1 role, his absence, depending on the severity, could stall the teamâs offensive development.
What is Fieldsâ injury?
Fields has suffered an injury to his right leg, with details and severity expected to be confirmed later in the day. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Jets quarterback was carted off the field, and the issue appears to be in the lower part of his leg.

Head coach Aaron Glenn is expected to address the situation during his press conference following practice. The signs are not encouraging, as FOX Sportsâ Ralph Vacchiano reported that Fields âwas in the front seat and stood up to limp inside once the cart stopped.â

Who could replace Fields?
In the event of a prolonged injury, the Jets may have to start the upcoming season without Fields and rely on one of their backup quarterbacks. Veteran Tyrod Taylor would likely be the immediate next man up, bringing 14 seasons of NFL experience to the position.
At the same time, the Jets also signed Adrian Martinez as a backup option. He was the 2024 UFL MVP with the Birmingham Stallions and will await his chance alongside Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent from the 2025 class. Itâs still too early to know whether New York will explore other options in the market.
