NFL News: After recovering Xavier Worthy, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes suffer new setback with Chiefs star joining injury list

Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes received good news with Xavier Worthy's return to practice, but the Kansas City Chiefs are now seeing another weapon join the injury list ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

The Kansas City Chiefs training camp at St. Joseph is leaving many storylines. Injuries seem to be a recurrent topic for the team, with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes missing multiple offensive weapons in practice. Even after recovering Xavier Worthy, the team was dealt a new blow ahead of the 2025 NFL season.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice didn’t practice Wednesday, raising concern in Kansas City. The Chiefs explained that the third-year wideout had to sit out with a groin injury, though the extent of the issue remains unclear.

And while it remains to be seen whether Rice will be able to resume team practice soon, his absence on Wednesday is enough to worry Chiefs Kingdom. Especially with a WR room struggling to look healthy.

Reid, Mahomes see Rice join list of injured players

Worthy returned to practice on Saturday after spending time on the concussion protocol, but Mahomes is still missing Marquise “Hollywood” Brown on the field. The veteran wideout, who missed much of his first season with the Chiefs last year due to a shoulder injury, is now on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Apart from Brown, Reid and the Chiefs are also missing tight end Jake Briningstool (hamstring) and linebacker Drue Tranquill (back). Having Rice on that list, even for a day, only adds insult to injury.

Rice could face suspension from NFL

Rice’s recent addition to the injury list may be just the first of a string of bad news involving the 25-year-old, who is expected to be suspended by the NFL at some point of the 2025 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after a multi-car crash accident in Dallas last year.

A Dallas County judge sentenced Rice to 30 days of jail time and five years’ probation after he agreed to plead guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury in the March 30, 2024, crash.

After finding out about the sentence, Reid explained that the Chiefs’ initial decision with Rice was to continue operating with him as full participant. His injury presents an unexpected setback for the Chiefs, but a suspension from the league could still be in the cards. Especially with the NFL recently suspending a star teammate of J.J. McCarthy on the Vikings.
