NFL News: Sean McVay breaks silence on Matthew Stafford as Rams prep for next week of camp

There was nothing particularly encouraging in what Sean McVay had to say about Matthew Stafford, who is currently battling back soreness as the Los Angeles Rams head into the next week of training camp.

Sean McVay was as clear as he could be about Matthew Stafford’s situation, confirming that the quarterback is currently dealing with back soreness and will likely be limited during the upcoming week of Rams training camp.

According to a report from Wyatt Miller, McVay revealed that Stafford is not expected to practice next week. The head coach emphasized this is not a setback, and the team is taking a week-to-week approach as Stafford continues to recover. The goal, McVay said, is to have him ready and fresh for the regular season.

It’s worth noting that the Los Angeles Rams struggled last season due to injuries, and with the regular season approaching, reports of Stafford dealing with some issues—though not severe—are raising concerns among fans.

Who is the Rams’ backup quarterback?

For this season, if Stafford is unable to start in the opening weeks, the Rams would likely turn to Jimmy Garoppolo, a veteran who now serves more as a mentor than a primary starter. Garoppolo would face off again with Davante Adams, with whom he previously played in Las Vegas.

Garoppolo hasn’t played more than ten games in a season since 2022, when he started 10 games. With the Rams in 2023, he started six of seven games, finishing the year with a 3-3-0 record.

Another option for the Rams is Stetson Bennett. According to a Rookie Watch report, Bennett is ready to compete for the QB2 role in his third NFL year. He was recently spotted at training camp looking bulkier and throwing sharp passes.
