NFL News: Shedeur Sanders sends clear message to Browns after Kevin Stefanski refused to name him backup quarterback against Steelers

Shedeur Sanders seemed to have a clear path to becoming the backup quarterback with the Browns after Joe Flacco's departure. However, Kevin Stefanski still has not given the rookie that role.

Shedeur Sanders spoke to the media for the first time after the Browns head coach, Kevin Stefanski, did not officially name him the backup quarterback in Cleveland. Despite the situation, the rookie admits that Joe Flacco’s departure is indeed an opportunity for him.

“I’m in a great mental space overall. So, I would say you tend to get a little bit more excited when you see a light at the end of the tunnel. For sure. Whatever my role is here, I’m thankful and I’m happy just to do that. I feel like now I’m ready, even not saying I wasn’t ready before, but now I’m ready for whenever my opportunity is.”

Now, unlike the first five weeks, Shedeur has a real opportunity for playing time in case Dillon Gabriel suffers an injury or performs poorly against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That scenario seemed unlikely for Sanders during training camp.

Who is the Browns starting quarterback?

Dillon Gabriel is the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, and after Joe Flacco’s departure to Cincinnati, many assumed that Shedeur Sanders would be the backup. However, Stefanski refused to confirm it. Despite this, while waiting for an update, Shedeur remains patient.

“We’re going to make sure we do everything we can to make sure Dillon is ready the game. Whatever that means. Each and every day, even when Joe was the starter, just prepare the right way and be ready to know that you can get out there at any point in time. I’m overly confident within myself. So, I know when I first got here that I’m ready to play, but, it’s up to the coaches and whatever decision they make. I’m fine with it.”
