Deshaun Watson will be one of the hottest names this offseason in the NFL after he requested a trade from his first team in the league, the Houston Texans. The young quarterback is reportedly ready to leave the franchise and plenty of rivals are watching this closely to see if they can make a move for him.
The Denver Broncos, New York Jets and more teams have been linked with a move for the 3x Pro-Bowler, but they won’t be the only one fighting to land one of the most exciting players in the league in his position.
Watson has everything to be successful in this league but he needs to find the perfect team for his needs. In recent hours, people have thrown a new name to the mix, suggesting that the Giants could join the player’s sweepstakes.
New York Giants’ stance on Deshaun Watson revealed
The New York Giants have been added to the list of suitors for Watson’s services, who could be a great addition to the team this offseason. Of course, that won’t be easy but the New Yorkers are somehow seen as a good landing spot for the 25-year-old.
They currently have Daniel Jones their starting quarterback and according to reports, they’re sticking with the young player instead of trying their luck in the trade market with Watson and the Texans.
Speaking on the Breaking Blue Podcast, ESPN’s Jordan Raanan explained that the team won’t be looking to go for Watson knowing that they have Jones on the roster right now. In fact, they won’t go after anybody to replace their signal-caller.
Moreover, SNY explains that the Giants don’t have many first-rounders to offer to the Texans, which is the most valuable currency for Deshaun right now. If they want to make the trade happen, they will have a hard job pulling that off.
For starters, they have the 11th overall pick this year, which is valuable, but far less attractive than the first-round picks the Jets (2nd), Dolphins (3rd), or Jaguars (1st) have to offer. And those three teams each have two first-round picks in 2021, which is a considerable advantage. The Giants have only their one.
That means the Giants would have to give up their first-round pick in each of the next three drafts, for starters. And that would deprive them of a young, talented, relatively inexpensive player to add to their roster for more than half of the remaining years on Watson’s deal. And they’d probably still have to give up more – maybe a fourth first-rounder or perhaps a couple of seconds along the way.
The Giants finished with a 6-10 record last season, incredibly fighting to win the NFC East until the last week of the season. They are confident their team can get better this season without any major addition, especially knowing that Saquon Barkley is returning from a season-ending injury.
