Mexico vs Honduras: Storylines andHead-to-Head
Mexico are once again favorites to claim Concacaf‘s ultimate prize and keep extending their dominance in the Gold Cup. Still, El Tri failed to shine in the group stage as they were held by Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador made them sweat on Matchday 3. El Tri managed to finish first, though, and how they perform from now on it’s what matters.
They won’t be counting on Hirving Lozano for the remainder of the tournament, which means a huge casualty for Martino’s side. However, Honduras seem to be under much more difficult circumstances following their defeat at Qatar. With Alberth Elis ruled out and Fabian Coito positive for Covid, this match comes in bad timing for La H. Nonetheless, they will give their best at State Farm Stadium to overcome thisseries of setbacks.
Needless to say, whenever these two familiar foes face each other, the soccer community is in for a treat. This will be the 39th meeting between Mexico and Honduras in the all-time series, in which El Tri have the edge with 22 victories, while La H won seven times, and they tied on nine occasions. Their last Gold Cup match came in 2017, also in Glendale, with Mexico winning 1-0. Honduras haven’t beat Mexico in the Gold Cup since the 2007 edition in the group stage.
